PLEASE READ - 4th gen section/thread clean up & consolidation - PLEASE READ

I have an idea [MENTION=55855]zopperman[/MENTION]….

So we have the ongoing thread "What did you do with your 4Runner today" that everyone posts in and constantly has something new.

I am currently having a problem with my cv boot but don't want to start a new thread just to ask one or two questions. How about a "Simple question about my 4Runner thread"?
 
[MENTION=5653]admin[/MENTION] I think that live chat would be a nice touch and take away from useless threads being made. On other car threads I am on its a nice place to ask questions and get quick answers without having to make a new thread
 
Break down the lift thread to specific lifts as ,toytec,OME,FJ coil swaps,All pro, and a compiled thread for those who have used several brands to build there truck. Maybe this will thin out the thread instead of having an pile of info in a huge paged thread especially if people were looking for specific details.
Just a thought.

This was kind of my original idea which didn't seem to be particularly well received.

This was what [MENTION=87539]wnelax04sr5[/MENTION] suggested to me and I think is the best course of action. I thinK i will throw up a "Simple Q&A - New members ask questions here" thread or something similarly titled and sticky it in the next few days.

But it doesn't have to pertain to just new members :help: We all need help sometimes!!

maybe we could clean up all the VSC off mod threads? im trying to find a good thread to follow but theres to many of them! im having trouble finding one for my 06 2wd sport edition.
 
we really should make it a minimum of like 10 posts before people can make threads. this past week has been crazy with new threads that should not have to be made and could be fixed by just using the search function
 
In regards to the search feature, it is quite terrible as we would all agree. Even more terrible if using Tapatalk which a large number of members use.

I am not sure what is involved in updating the forum to enable Tapatalk Features (I think it's just a matter of updating to the latest Tapatalk api) but other forums that I visit allow for filtering of searches through Tapatalk. I think this could allow users who primarily use Tapatalk to find things easier and be less likely to post duplicate threads. As of right now, if I search through Tapatalk, it searches the entire t4r.org site and does not allow me to view only 4th Gen forum results.

While not directly related to cleaning up the forums, it certainly could be a means of preventing future clutter.

(more updated forums also allow users to 'like' posts directly from the app... Would love that feature in this forum as well :) )

UPDATE: here is an example of filtering in Tapatalk that is enabled on another forum I read... (Tacoma World)

How about a sub-forum for all the "ABC-XYZ Build" threads? I know folks get a lot of ideas from them for their own t4r but I find the single topic/upgrade/fix threads more focused.

Personally, I think continuity is under-rated. Clothes closets benefit from purging and rearranging -- computer data, not so much.

I save huge amounts of information on my computer and I can also find it. Part of the key has been continuity. I only organize going forward. I almost never rearrange the past.

I don't find the site that hard to search. Perhaps an ongoing (sticky) thread for search tips would be helpful, but we all know that starting a thread and asking a question is by far the easiest and most effective thing to do. And we all know that fresh threads generate more responses than old ones -- and traffic pays for the site (does [MENTION=5653]admin[/MENTION] want fewer newbies asking questions? I honestly don't know). People have a massive bias toward convenience and freshness -- in donuts or information. Personally, I've resigned myself to this being the way things work and I happily answer redundant questions.

Now, how to simultaneously accommodate traffic, organization, and data retention while leveraging user knowledge is a much larger and difficult discussion that would probably have to involve full admin powers.

Agree here. The only thing worse than missing info is missing pics in a DIY thread. :)

Not sure why people are still getting upset that someone doesn't search in 2014. Donuts man, donuts.

+1, absolutely should be allowed.

Want to see it done right? Evo "Official" Picture Threads.

Start offical color threads, start brand threads:
  • Radflo Lift Picture Thread
  • Bistein/FJ Lift Picture Thread
  • Bilstein/Mixed Spring Lift Picture Thread
  • OME Lift Picture Thread
  • Kings Lift Picture Thread
  • Aux Lighting Thread
  • Fuel Wheels Thread
  • Pro Comp Wheels Thread
  • Duratrac Picture Tread
  • AT KO Picture Thread
etc.

Then sticky an "official picture threads" thread with a link to all the other ones. Make it super easy to find.

It's the best idea on these forums. Go ahead and search the lift/tire thread for 265/70/R17 duratracs. It will pull up 500 non duratracs and 3 duratracs. Literally do not try FJ springs, it will be a total waste of time. It picks up everyone's sigs, mentions, etc. etc. Fairly useless, even with Google.

One help thread would be good. You'll still have stragglers posting new threads for their first post though.

Even if you can't make any changes ultimately, I applaud your desire to make the forum better. Thanks for caring!

I am a member on TacomaWorld, as well. The "what have you done to you're Tacoma today.." thread is used as the general discussion thread in the 1st gen section. I think that a stickied mass thread for general 4runner talk, plus a 3 day, 20 post minimum before starting new threads would help the issue of to many new threads. It would give a more comfortable environment for new posters. Of course it would not solve the issue completely due to the nature of Forums in general.

I think that a seperate section for build threads would make the site easier to navigate. Different sections per geneartion 4runner.

The search function on the site will not get better unless information is deleted. The only real way to do it without a mass effort would be to start from scratch, and delete everything. Obviously that is a bad idea, because there is a wealth of knowledge on this site; therefore I think we should give up on fixing the search function. The only reasonable way I see going with this is programing the search button to only search titles.

Is there a way to delete all threads with less than 5 posts? That would eleminate 1/3 of the 4th gen section.

deleted endless repetitions

some posts are copying entire previous posts/threads incl. pics and attachments etc. - so when you read through them you have to go through page after page of repetitions while the actual new posts are often short! And if there are pics you get slowed down even more since the same pics have to be downloaded again and again.

So my question: is there any way to clean up threads so that we can see the new posts alone and not endless repetitions of the previous posts?
