Po – My ‘18 TRDORP Build/Adventure Thread

Introduction

Well, it was finally time to upgrade to a new rig. Some may now that I previously had a 4th gen and it was awesome, but unfortunately the damn Northeast rust became too much, and it was unsafe to drive in the long run. So I started shopping around and found a dealer that was willing to play ball with a good deal on a new 4Runner, and a lot more than I was expecting for my ’03. And now here we are.

This is my new build. A 2018 TRD Off-Road Premium in Super White. I fell in love with the white on the lot and couldn’t say no. I am a big fan of all the black and white builds on here, and considering my previous 4th gen was black, I figured it was time for a change. Every good build needs a name, so this TRDORP is Po, my black and white panda build lmao. :crazy:

I’ve got a lot of big plans and adventures for this build, and I am pumped as hell to get started and hit the trails! And a fair warning. I do photography for a living so this thread will probably be picture heavy!

Shots of the 4th Gen

Figured I would also show what I am coming from. This was my 03 Limited V8. Took me on some awesome adventures and allowed me to meet some really cool people, but as you can see by the pictures below, she was a lost cause.

Yes that is the frame. Yes that looks like crap. Yes it has lived it's entire life in the Northeast. Yes you should take care of your frames!

Lol I did the same exact thing. Test drove a Limited (mainly cause it was the only one on the lot) and then a TRDORP. Was definitely leaning towards the TRDORP from the get go, but I could not be happier with it so far. You'll love it!

Weathertech Floor Mats

Starting things out with just some simple quality of life stuff before I jump in to much bigger (and more expensive) mods. Just gonna drive Po around for a while and get a feel for 'em before I go too crazy.

Had weathertechs in the previous rig. Definitely need weathertechs in this one. Took out the stock carpet mats and put these puppies down. Fit like a glove which was great and super happy with how it looks and matches the rest of the interior.

Scosche Magic Mount

Again, had one of these in the previous rig, and 100% needed one in this one. Basically this thing sticks on with pre-applied 3M tape, and then it's just a big ol' magnet that attaches to a little plate that you stick on the back of your phone.

It was much easier to find a spot on the 4th gen, but I saw a number of people drilling in to their dash in this spot for a RAM Mount, so I went for it. I wanted something that wasn't so permanent, so I decided to try it out. Never had a problem with my phone falling or anything while offroading on the previous rig, so I am confident this will hold up pretty well.

As you can see, it is a pretty awesome fit. The phone doesn't contact the dash at all, and it is pretty visible for navigation, etc from my usual driving position. All in all, super happy with it and how easy it is to plop my phone in and out.

BROG and Patches

Just some simple stuff for today. Threw in a bunch of my favorite patches from my 4th gen as well as my BROG visor organizer. Such a convenient piece of gear.

Got a list of stuff coming up that I am hoping to get done in the next couple of weeks if all goes well.
-Rear Diff/E Locker Breathers
-Reinstall ARB Twin Compressor with Bandi Mount
-Plumb a remote air line to the front of the rig somewhere
-American Flag Decal on the back windows
-Blackout Emblems

Decals and Emblems

Blacked out the silver emblems and am loving the look overall. The black and white panda theme is a real winner in my mind lol. Easy enough to install. Basically just a cover with 3M tape on the back. Press on and booyah you got yourself some black emblems.

Also did a set of flag decals for the rear windows from OverlookGraphics. Really tricky to install to be honest. I thought these came pre-cut, but they didn't. Having to apply and then cut it was much trickier than I thought. And peeling such a massive decal across the window proved to be difficult single-handedly the first time and I got a bit of a rip in the decal. Unfortunate, but they will get scratched up eventually, so no harm done really. Super happy with how they came out and how they look on the 4Runner.

ARB Diff Breather Kit

ARB Diff Breather Kit

Wanted to make sure I get my rear diff breather up and out of the way just for some peace of mind. The ARB Diff Breather kit makes it pretty damn easy which is great. Ran the hose from the rear diff with a flex loop up by the gas tank, along the top of the frame rail, and then through the engine compartment.

The original plan was to mount the breather just to the left of the master cylinder (when facing the front grille) but I couldn't get the self-tapping screws to bite very well, and I was being a bit of a ***** when it came to drilling a hole in a brand new truck lmao.

So I ended up just using some zipties and mounted it to the wire harness that is there from the factory. It ended up working really well which was great. I ended up only running the rear diff breather for now, but I am going to go back and run the rear locker breather eventually. Not sure if I will have enough tubing for it from the ARB kit either, so I may just buy some extra tubing to be safe.

I tightened in the fitting pretty well on the rear diff, but it still had some threads showing. I have seen other people with similar threads showing, but just curious if other people know if that is right or wrong. I am pretty sure it is meant to be torqued to 30 in/lbs but I just did about as tight as the factory breather.















Also found out two really cool things today. First, the small T4R decals that [mention=165]Momo[/mention] sells fit perfectly between the stripes on the flag decals from Overlook Graphics. And second, I suck ass at applying decals! What a fun day! :redbrick:

Yea I hear you on that one. That's why I am doing everything in my power to keep this as rust free as possible. My 4th gen was a wreck...

9011 (HIR) High Beam Upgrade

High Beam Upgrade (9011)

Lighting on the stock 4Runner isn't that great, so I decided to do some upgrades to the lighting just to start with. The plan is as follows:

-TRS 4500k HIDs
-XB LED Fog Light Housings
-9011 High Beams Upgrade

HIDs and LED Fogs just came in the mail, but I didn't have time to do that upgrade as it is a bit more involved. The 9011 HIR high beam upgrade is absurdly easy, so I just took a crack at that and got it done in about 20 minutes. I actually did this upgrade on my older 4th gen as well, so I knew what I was getting myself in to and definitely thought it was a worthy upgrade. DRLs and everything still work fine as normal, but you get a decent bit more light on your high beams at night which is great of the backroads I tend to travel.

6.8-6.10 Vermont Camping

Took the weekend to take Po out on his first camping trip and spend some time alone in the woods. Went up to a nice spot in Vermont that I have been going to for a few years and absolutely loved it. Brought my camera gear and decided to do some timelapses which I think came out pretty cool! Going to see how they look when put together in a video, but I dig the star trails haha.

All in all I was fairly impressed with the 4Runner and how it did over some muddy and rocky terrain. One thing I was not impressed about was the stock lighting (as I mentioned in a previous post) so I also installed my HIDs when I got back, but that is for another post. Next up are the LED Fogs.

Yeah buddy! They're installing my TRD Pro lift, their slimline front winch bumper, undercoating the undercarriage, 6 shooter wheels w/ Nitto Ridge Grappler tires and blacking out the hood.
