POLL: What Brand & Type of Oil Do You Use?

I'm curious what oil folks are running and why?

I realize that you may use more than one brand or type and that you may have multiple vehicles. So I'll clarify — "what brand and type of motor oil did you use in your last oil change on your 3rd gen 4Runner?

I know oil talk is a can of worms, but I'm curious how people have come to choose one brand over the other.

I believe the poll is limited to 15 choices, so I only added the most common oil brands in the US. Also, in an effort to keep the choices to 15 or less, I put the choices of conventional, blend or full synthetic last, and made the poll so that you could vote multiple times.

So try to just vote once for your oil brand and once for type of oil.

Well my father owns the main service station in my little town, family owned since 1949. We have seen first hand anything and everything when it comes to oil. Performance wise along with oil viscosity Mobil 1 is head and shoulders the best oil out there. Royal Purple in second, but enough difference that I would never switch to RP. Run Mobil 1 oil and filter on every single car & truck we own.

I buy whatever 5qt jug of conventional is on sale at Amazon for around $14. Usually Chevron or Quaker State & a Wix filter. I think I'm gonna buy one of those Toyota filter 10 packs for $35 to save more money.

Valvoline semi synthetic Maxlife. Great stout oil.

Castrol 0W-30 is probably the best I have ever used in the 4runner. It made the engine purr.

Can you elaborate a little on what kind of things you've seen that make you feel that Mobile 1 is superior? I'm not questioning your opinion, I'm just curious what your experiences have been.

In all that time, have you or your family witnessed particular oils that have cause damage to engines?

Walmart sells the 5qt jug for $25. such a steal! I get the extended miles 15,000 and change around 8-10k. 215k miles so far and running strong.

If anyones curious about oil, look into some of the Blackstone Laboratories testing. been a while but synthetics are amazing compared to dyno oil.

Used to be a die hard Mobil 1 user until i got into autocross and track and saw multiple failures using the 1. The multi time national SCCA champ who bought my Z06 asked if i had used mobil in it and was happy to hear i had not (factory fill excluded)

Are you referring to Mobil 1 oil?

I have not seen any published Blackstone lab reports outside of individual/personal UOAs. Do you have a link to this or is is on their website perhaps?

Mine runs great on Castrol GTX 10W-30 and that's what I plan on sticking with.

It (and Lucas) got my dad's 22R-E to 490k+ without a rebuild, so I would say it's pretty darn good.

Amsoil 5w-30 Full synthetic signature. Black bottle red cap. Every other change or so I add some marvel mystery oil. I run a pl20195 pureone filter. Roughly 10k oil and filter change intervals. Oil still comes out with a little golden honey to it. 226k miles on the 5VZ. When I had the valve covers off around 190k to change them everything was shiny and smooth, no sludge in sight.

Redline MT90 GL4 in the trans and royal purple 75w90 GL5 in everything else right now, though I'm probably going to go full Amsoil soon.

The way it was told to me seafoam is a solvent where as marvel is a detergent. Only run seafoam in the oil for a short interval as it can thin or break down the oil but marvel can go the distance as it isn't as aggressive a cleaner. I am not a chemical engineer. I have run 1/3 bottle of seafoam in the oil before but not for longer than a few hundred miles just before a change. Did that for my first two oil changes to loosen any gack from the previous owner.

Seafoam through the throttle body on the other hand always seems to be a good idea, granted there comes a point of diminishing returns. It may also cause some irregular wear or deposits on your spark plugs so I recommend a heavy treatment just before a spark plug change.

I prefer the liquid seafoam through a vacuum line to the newer spray stuff through the TB plate or sure.

Technically I run mobil super which is a synthetic blend, but I voted for mobil 1 since that was the closest option and what I run in my other cars ('90 volvo 740 turbo and '00 E55 AMG)

Just make sure that whatever line you use it is far enough upstream that it feeds all cylinders, there's a few different vacuum setups depending on year or Fed vs Cali emissions and sometimes the line only goes to a single cylinder, you'll end up with one really clean cylinder.

I usually use a full 1 quart size in substitution for 1 quart of oil, just makes the math easier, but again it's an once every other oil change if I remember thing rather than a mandatory practice.

If you'd like, just keep a sharp eye on your oil consumption between changes and add Marvel to keep the level at full. If you end up using a full quart before a change then just change when you're out of marvel. I wouldn't run more than a quart of the stuff at one time. It's darn good stuff but it isn't oil and it does thin the mix a little. (You can put marvel in your gas according to the bottle but I have not as of yet done so, I have run a bottle of seafoam through the gas however.) I did this when I used to consume or loose a half quart between 10k changes, no longer, level just stays. Maybe it's Mystery oil, maybe it's Maybelline.

Since where on the subject of fluids, I also try to get ethanol free gas whenever I can, it's readily available near my home sold as "87 oct boat Fuel" and is typically 30c/gal more or so but it makes a big difference both according to torque pro app and seat of the pants feel. I spin more now.
