Poor man rear bumper / tire carrier (or lack there of)

Long story short I had ordered a rear bumper after getting slightly rear ended but mom got cancer and funds had to be diverted. Since my rear lift gate had a dent I still liked the idea of a rear tire carrier to cover it up.

Detours makes simple hitch carriers for Jeeps mostly but I called them up and after talking with Mark we came up with a simple and inexpensive solution. They custom made a bolt on carrier that could be added to my rear crossmember. With the rear bumper cover plastic notched this could also be added without the full bumper removal but I liked it this way better.

Thanks it turned out good. Looks very aggressive in person. The rear tire comes down to a 45 degree angle so it makes it easy to lift back into place.

Detours is the company that makes the tire carrier. Mine was $300 shipped but if you contact Mark [email protected] he will be able to give you specifics. With the bumper off it is just a matter of drilling two holes in the rear crossmember. You could then cut out a space on the rear bumper or just remove it like I did.

I did cut a section of my rear bumper and keep it. You will notice that the top of the bumper and the section that curves around the bottom of the tailgate is still there. I like it this way to keep mud and dirt from getting caked in under the tailgate. Other wise this is give me way more clearance.

Dang that's not really that cheap for a carrier. I looked into buying a jeep swing out and getting it mounted to our bumper or have a piece made to fit, that's about the cheapest rpute, especially if you know a fabricator like I do. I've just had so many other things costing me money to justify the looks expense right now

Also you can get hitch mounted systems as well but did want anything hanging off my hitch since I use it all the time.

Yea, have you ever seen those double hit things, hitch over your hitch, I thought about mounting a tire carrier on one of those, just don't know how high it would be, not trying to dis you just not the cheapest route.. don't get offended I'm known to be a cheap basterd..lol.. I thought about doing the same with my rear bumper as you just take the sides off but I have the lights mounted and no tire carrier yet, I'll probably copy you if you don't mind, just a different cheaper fab person. I'm a horse trader so I'll probably get it for next to nothing

It looks great btw, I like the added slotted pieces on the top, I had a similar idea for mine, with a plate on the bottom to act as the new bumper, probably out of 6 inch channel iron I'd like to protect the carrier if it was hit
