Portal Axles

I wonder what a real demand would be for something like this...

I have a half-finished project to use internals from a MB G-Wagon' s portal axles in a custom housing for a 4Runner's front IFS...

Those MB parts are unfortunately wickedly expensive. Much easier packaging than the hummer stuff though...
 
The price of our portal kit for the 4Runner, Tacoma and FJ is $14,000.

If you think that's an unfair price, I'd like to know how much the alternative you prefer would cost)

It's a decent price as it basically includes a regear and a 5-inch lift in one step without trashing your cv angles. Not sure everyone is realizing how inclusive this is.

The RCLTHD is also an option but the actual price when you look at their required parts page is 9700 -11700. And doesn't include regearing your axles. It does move the front axle forward which is nice.
 
74Weld Portal Axles on 5th Gen 4Runner - Walkaround

Yo guys, finally wrapped up the walkaround video on the 74Weld Portal Build.

This thing has been an absolute animal in the rocks. We were out wheeling with this last week with a SAS 3rd Gen Tacoma, SAS 5th Gen 4Runner, JD Fab LT rig, and a few other well-optioned long-traveled 4Runners and Tacomas. The 74W portals (16.5" clearance rear and 18.5" clearance in the front) did better than all the long travel rigs. The SAS rigs still had much better axle articulation through large boulders but when it comes to IFS optioned rigs, the portals had more ground clearance which proved to perform better overall.

Out of 10 rigs on the trail, two were SAS and the rest were IFS. Two IFS rigs blew driveshafts, one IFS rig with JD Fab LT blew 3 tie-rods, another IFS rig blew a CVC axle and a handful of guys caught body damage in addition to 4-5 headlights and taillights were smashed in.

The portal build walked through without any damage.

When it comes to long travel vs. portals, there is simply no comparison. The portals provide way more ground clearance which ultimately determines how you navigate through a trail.
 
Apparently the thing that looks like a solid axle tie rod is just some reinforcement.
What tires are those? They look like bias-ply Trepadors from the inside, but the tread pattern isn't quite right.

Its a shock absorber, to act as a steering stabilizer likely to keep death wobble at bay.

Pretty cool but the problem with portal boxes is they can't handle speed and overheat. Definitely interested in finding out more info.

This is correct for SEALED units, the oil, as it gets hot, offgasses which builds pressure inside the unit which then blows the seals out and they piss oil everywhere.
If you are going to be riding on the roads you MUST vent them, drill and tap a hole at the top of the portal and put a small nipple in the top of the portal and run a vent line from there, up to somewhere safe where water wont get in. As long as you vent them you wont have any troubles on the road. If you look at ATV differentials you will see a small "bellow" which looks like an acordian. At normal operation around the yard you wont see the bellow move. If you run the machine down the road a few miles at speed you will see the bellow grow larger as it collects the gasses, which expands the bellow and keeps you from blowing seals out.
We learned this a long time ago in portal hubs on the ATVs and SxS, they do great running trails, climbing, mud, rocks, slow speeds, in creeks and water, but if you put them on the road, within a mile or two they are pissing oil out the axle seals. You gotta drill and tap the portal and put a vent line in it to vent the offgasses from the oil as it gets hot.
