Possible High/DLR/Fog mod

I've been running XD HID 4300 bulbs in my '17 TRDORP and so far really like the results. The only down side is the fog lights are more or less useless at this point.

I recently I got a set of DDM-Tuning Saber Pro 40w 9005 High/DRL bulb. Overall I was very impressed with the light output and quality. The price was also a big draw as well. Yes there is touch of flicker when I pull close to a are at a stoplight, but that doesn't bother me at all. In DRL mode they are bright without being annoying (in my mind) and when you need the high beam ... AAAHHHHH.

This got me to thinking about ways to get a little more use out of my fog lights. Could I 'add' the fog lights, with LED buls, to the High/DRL function and still retain fog lights for use with the low beams.

The fog lights would need to be yellow because I want to actually use them in fog, rain and snow (if needed). This I believe could be easily fixed with yellow/amber film or amber/yellow LEDs.

There are several threads about swapping out to Toyota LED fog lights, retro fitting Rigid D2s and some interesting wiring mods. They are all interesting, but didn't really fit what is floating around in my head. At least I didn't see anything.

What I'm thinking is the following and doing in a way that removable. I really don't want to make permanent changes.
  • DRL - High beams and fog lights run at a lower power
  • Low beams - Fog lights function with OEM switch (on/off)
  • High beams - Fog lights come on regardless of OEM switch

My thoughts were that moving from standard halogen bulbs to LED would lower the voltage draw to a point where cross connecting lighting circuits wouldn't blow a fuse. This means I could effectively cross connect (with a diode) to loop my fog lights into the High/DRL.

The Saber Pro 40w bulbs draw 3.3a per bulb (per DDM). If I was to power the fogs off the high beam, the total draw would be about 6.6a. This is still less then OEM fuse and slightly higher then the halogen 9005 (5.4-ish amps).

Option 1
Install and extension harness on the High/DRL and Fog lights. Then connect the hot side of the High/DLR to the hot side of the Fog lights. To stop the fog lights from running the high beams, there will be a diode in the cross connect. All the wiring will be contained in the front near the lights.

Option 2
Connect the 'H-LP HI' fuse to the 'FOG FR' fuse using add-a-circuit fuse adaptors. I haven't checked the fuse location yet, but I'm assuming 'H-LP HI' is the right one. One concern here is I would need to bring a new wire through the firewall. I'm not sure how much of a pain that will be. There would also be a diode to prevent the fogs from lighting the high beams.
