Possible slippage?

Good evening!

I'm consulting with you in the hope that I get a better understanding of a couple of issues. I have 2006 4wd v6. Over the last year, I have had occasional "slippage" of traction. It seems random. I'm stopped at a light, when I start, I hear this loud scraping type noise and I can't seem to go forward for a couple of seconds. Then it goes away and everything proceeds as normal. Today it happened again when starting uphill. I got that scraping sound when turning right and it took a few seconds to " catch" and proceed normally. I have mentioned it to the mechanic before but he didn't seem worried about it since it didn't happen when he test drove it.

Is this something I need to address quickly?

I also have one other issue. I recently had the differential fluids changed. Not long afterward, I noticed that my steering wheel would move side to side when going over bumps. The problem gets magnified if I'm braking and I go over a bump at the same time.

Check trans fluid condition and level asap

Regarding the slipping definitely check transmission fluid level and quality. Don't put that off, do it as soon as possible.

As for the sloppy steering over bumps, have the front end suspension components checked out - upper and lower ball joints and bushings especially.

To be honest, your problem with the scraping/crunching sound on acceleration from stop sounds like impending mechanical failure. It could be a slipping torque converter due to low fluid, but they typically don't make crunching sounds.

I would be more inclined to think it's a locking collar or clutch on the low gear set in the tranny that is not engaging properly, and is slipping instead. Somewhat like grinding the gears in a manual transmission.

First thing I'd do is check for transmission codes. Might be a bad shift solenoid or valve that is failing to engage low gear fully.

Beyond that, I'd take it back to the mechanic and have him try standing on the brakes while giving the engine full power from full stop. Hopefully that will stress it enough to stimulate the problem and so it can be identified and fixed.

Right now I think you have a time bomb that is likely to leave you stranded some day soon.

Changing subjects, I doubt your steering issues have anything to do with the differential service. More likely, as has been said, worn parts in the front suspension. The first thing I would check is the condition of the steering damper.
