Post-Rollover Repair, Accepting All Guidence and Input (w/ pics)

My very special 4 wheeled creature rolled over in the snow the other day. She still drives perfectly, and i am going to try and do what i can to fix her.

Its a 2000 5speed with e-locker, first car i ever bought, i was living out of it/still need to live out of it. i love it, took me 7 arduous months of searching to find her, not ready to give her up.

After 2 days of exploring options the thing to do seems to be to cut off the roof of another 4runner and get 4 new doors. The pillars on mine didnt get bent! Just the roof and doors, and some glass got knocked out too. The color of the donor is trivial to me.

There is a 2001 in Portland that is being parted out and i think i might drive out there and get the work done.

Anybody have advice or experience that would be pertinent here?

I am currently homeless, and am willing to do the repair anywhere in idaho, oregon, or arizona, but perferably oregon. My sister is going to lend me the money for now, and im thinking $3k minimum, but hopefully not too much more.

If anyone knows any good body shops in Portland, Bend, Grants Pass, etc. or any good 4runners out there to steal a roof from, let me know. I really need to get this most embarrassing happening in the past.

My buddy has a roof and 3 doors that he would probably give you a good deal on.
The snow/ice hit the body shops here(Portland) pretty hard, and most good shops are backed up at least 4 weeks, last I heard. PM me if you're interested in his roof/doors.
 
Your dollar might go further here in canada. There is a wrecker in Langley bc that has 25 4runners, I haven't been there yet but plan to soon to check it out.
 
That being said, even if you get the roof and doors you need for, say $400- it's still a huge job for a body shop. I'm no professional, but it seems like $3k may not cover that. Have you called any shops? My cousin was a body tech at Kadels for 10 years, and just moved to McCollum in Portland a couple years ago. He said McCollum is a great shop. 100% stay AWAY from Leif's!
 
That's a huge job for a shop to undertake. Are you also 100% positive the pillars didn't get bent? Even if they're bent a little that is going to make this near impossible to get anywhere close to right.
 
Yea you're right, there seems to be a HUGE waiting list for body work in Oregon right now...

But i've talked to 5 shops on the phone and one in person and they all seem to think that it's a possible repair and that they've done it before.

Looks i can get 4 doors for 4-500 from craigslist and a roof for 380 from Lkq pick a part.

If you've already talked to shops, then you have a good idea on what it'll cost, so I won't try to tell you it will cost more than you think! Haha
So, what happened? [emoji12]
 
well i havent talked detailed business with all shops. Three or four told me they are months away from being available, so i left it at that for now.

The one i talked to in person in Idaho said around 3k cash if i go get the doors. And i emailed pics to Clakamas Auto Body / Sherwood Auto Body in Portland, theyll get back to me with time and price tomorrow im assuming.

The first place i took it to in idaho said 8k, but he wasnt thinking about welding a new roof. He did give me the free plastic windows though!
 
Here's a thought. Is it still roadworthy enough to drive? Or are you just waiting for the first cop to pull you over? If so...

I'd use a big hammer to make it as good as possible then head for Baja. Settle in on the beach south of Ensenada and enjoy the sun while you get her fixed. Forget that snow and rain stuff. I did quite a bit of junk yarding down there and you will find 4runners there too.

Maybe someone else can comment on labor costs. I don't figure it would be any more expensive.
 
the roof itself really is not that big of a job to replace if you have the correct tools...

However, it really depends on your pillars (a/b/c) and rear quarter including the rear gate....if ANY of those are fubar by about an 1/8 " then it starts getting very interesting...

Trust me....

I had a car that was barely rear ended and that repair took more than a month to fix...

The other was T-boned and was out the door in a week...

Body swap, ok I get that...not a bad idea but possibly not the cheapest option

I 100% and totally agree with you!! That thing could be sealed up for peanuts! Personally I drove way worse as my first two were Ins. totals. One was rolled over and the other was hit by a semi. They only pull you over for having things wrong not dents. Now, if you go creeping around a neighborhood at 3am...they will and should find a reason to stop you.
 
So.... why don't you just replace the doors/glass? I mean that seems like a huge project (huge as in getting it done right so it actually looks better than now) and honestly it doesn't look THAT bad... I "rolled" my 3rd gen, well rolled it partially onto the roof while offroading, and the rear glass got broken and there's a bunch of dents on the roof where a tree stopped me, etc. but the glass place I took it to was able to get the rear glass to seal even though the roof was bent and window frames were bent.

Can you do that? Assuming you would want to of course. Seems like that'd be way easier and way cheaper to just get everything to line up and call it good. Throw a roof basket on and 99% of people wouldn't know, plus it's a cool story. You said the pillars (most likely) aren't bent so the doors should still line up and seal fine too. Cutting off the whole roof or doing a body swap seems like a ton of work, granted that'd probably be the preferred method but you said you live out of the truck so it sounds like you might be better off not totally disassembling the whole thing. Food for thought and my $.02...

Hi,, Sorry for what happened and hoping that everyone is safe.

90% of my repairs ware body work.
Chassis still aligned and had to buy a new rear axle shaft + mirrors.


I repaired the truck and running perfect till this moment.

The only thing i can advice from the photos is to take extra care when repairing the sun roof... it needs to be perfect so doesn't leak rain water into your cabin.

i agree, i dont think its that bad. like i said, after i got pulled out of the snow i drove it 5 more hours that night and didnt notice any prolems

But what did you do to fix yours? i didnt see a conclusion on your thread


And does anybody know if any 3rd gen door will fit my 2000 sr5?

I think if i knew more spanish i would go down to mexico and have it fixed, that still might be an option.. i was planning on going there end of march any way. there's just other life factors that dont totally jive with that route at the moment
 
Just so you understand where I'm coming from. This is the 2nd roll over for my last 95. (sold it for 500 and the guy drove it away) I had the tow company haul it to my place. I was going to seal it up and drive it. Notice all the mid/front side windows were fine. I got the total BS from the other half and approval to buy a new/used one. I would not even hesitate to have driven this. The passenger side (first roll over) looked like the drivers fender the entire length. I guess this was just too much for some people.

I saw a wa plated vehicle. PM me and I will tell you what you need to legally drive it on the road including RCW to quote gratis. Normally it would cost a little for the info. I do like beer...just saying.
