Post-Timing Belt Question

4-Legged-Runner

New member
Hi everyone.

Recently did the timing belt and water pump change on the 2005 4Runner w/90K miles. I have owned this vehicle since new, so I am very aware with how it drives and sounds.

Since the belt change, I have noticed a significant "whine"coming for the engine at idle and in first and second gear. By third and subsequent gears, speed or road noise drown out the sound. Or the sound disappears.

I knew enough to do the water pump at the same time as the timing belt. But unfortunately did not know to do the tensioner pulley(s). Now each time I pull away for a stop I think a pulley or belt is about to go.

Is this sound normal post-timing belt change? Is my alternator on its way out? Any assistance anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for all of your help.

Mine did not whine after installing a new oem water pump and belt. I reused the idlers. Did you use a oem water pump? Maybe an inferior water pump is making the noise. If the idler bearing were not making a noise before the install they should not after.

if it was done at the dealer, I would ask them to look at it for free since they "caused" the issue. at least you could find out what it is.

I certainly plan on discussing this with the service dept. I know full well that the noise is new since the belt change. I made sure to ask for OEM water pump, and not a remanufactured or off brand.

All insight is appreciated. I sometimes am suspect as to the knowledge level and quality of the service department.

My guess is the one of the belts is too tight… not necessarily timing belt, especially since it uses hydraulic tensioner. I would recommend checking other belts.

Take the serpentine belt off and start the engine. If the noise goes away you know it is not the timing belt. It would be the alternator or one of the engine driven accessories or idler pulley. The sepentine belt has an automatic tensioner, no adjustment can be made.

I'm about to do this on my '03, would you mind telling me what you paid at the dealer? Did they just charge you for the water pump as a part or did they charge additional labor for the water pump? Thanks.

Verdict is....

...dying power steering pump!!!

Problem is, I know the sound was not there prior to the belts being changed. I am shocked that suddenly the PS Pump is on its way out. Convenient timing.

you sure its not just that belt being too tight?

Neither the timing belt or serpentine belt use set-screw tensioners, 1 is hydraulic, 1 is spring/loaded. It's hard to over-tighten these belts like the old ones. If anything, they get looser. It always tends to be a pulley, or a pump or something.
