Which wire do I cut into to splice the switch? I believe its the black and red one. I want a switch to raise the antenna up and down for the trails. I have a stock head unit. NOT Aftermarket (yet)

Last, buy a switch for the antenna. This way you can keep your mast down most all the time as the window antenna works great. If you REALLY need it, just flip the switch and raise the pirate flag for better reception
Splice the switch into the antenna wire which I believe is black/red on the 96-99 and black/white on the 00-02 (need to double check that). If an aftermarket radio, the wire will be blue or blue white depending on the radio and kit. (some radios combine amp turn on with power antenna)
This switch is a flawless fit for a knockout to the left of the steering wheel
Scion OEM Style Rocker Switch I do feel it is overpriced but I never searched for a cheaper direct fit. They also have a lighted one as well.
If you have a stock stereo, just buy the switch and new mast and splice the switch into the antenna wire. DONE.

Dude its so small and looks like its apart of the dash. I saw some of those at radioshack. I got a small round toggle with no lights. I was gonna stick it under the cigarette lighter. But your idea looks way better haha.

OK, this thread actually answered a question I've been meaning to ask. Just bought a '99 and the factory radio 'supposedly' died just as I was on my way over to test drive. I did not know if the power antenna was tied into the radio power or was a separate hidden switch. Now I know for my aftermarket radio! Thanks, guys.

This is what I'll be doing, I just need the antenna adapter first, so I only need to get in there once to wire everything up.

Ok, I have a question about this for the antenna. I bought a rocker switch for my after market headunit. I currently have an amp using the power control switch as well.
I connect the power control switch and amp into the same power control wire. I get that, the wiring i use actual has a Y adapter thing to connect both.
The question is, when connecting the switch to the power control / amp / headunit, do i need to connect a fuse for the switch? If so how many amps do i need? I can't find a good explanation anywhere.

You don't need a fuse. The wire your splicing is just a signal wire with no real substantial load. The antenna circuit itself (the antennae and relay) is fused already from the factory.

Old thread, I know, but I'm having a related problem. After 2 years of perfect operation, my pioneer head unit is draining my battery because its trying to send power to the antenna mast motor even when the vehicle is off (small amperage draw for radio presets/clock). I'm not familiar with the wiring...would an antenna raise/lower switch solve this problem? I'm concerned the issue is a malfunction within the head unit and would only be solved by interrupting power upstream of the stereo...ie if the blue wire sends signal from the stereo to the antenna motor, is it still going to be sending power to the switch constantly at a very low draw?

How do you come to this conclusion? The antennae should go up when the stereo is powered on and down when powered off.
Switches don't draw a load, they interrupt it. Once the circuit is broken no load will be present.
I had a broken antenna the first 3 years of ownership and im still on the battery that it came with. Nothing is "killing" your battery unless your alternator is going out. when the vehicle is on its basically drawing power from your alt and your battery is simply there for startup.

Yes, I'm hoping a switch will work here to interrupt the circuit and therefore no load. If not, at least I'll have the switch installed if/when I have to replace the head unit. Worth a try...especially because I already have a switch to fit the pop-outs left of the steering wheel. Thanks!
Incorrect. Alternator bench tested fine. Battery voltage is normal if vehicle is driven every few days. Very low amperage draw was traced back to the head unit harness, specifically to the power antenna mast motor wire. The malfunctioning aftermarket stereo is sending several milliamps (normally used for maintaining clock time and radio presets) to the power antenna motor...not enough amperage to raise the antenna but enough to draw the vehicle battery down over 5-7 days if not driven.
