Power Antenna Switch

I can't remeber the last time I needed my power antenna since I installed satellite radio, but I do not want to kill it completely by disconnecting the motor. Can anyone help me with how to wire a switch to it? Nothing to work completely independent, just so that when the h/u is on I can decide whether or not I want the antenna up.

theres a wire coming out the head unit that is usually solid blue color. You would probably want to put a switch in line with that wire. maybe a momentary push button or toggle switch.

like jeremy said, there should be a wire coming out of your aftermarket HU (usually blue, and most times marked as Power Antenna), it should be easy to find from your HU documentation. Putting a switch in-line on that wire should do the trick. i would go with a toggle switch. The HU sends a low current signal down that wire that actuates the antenna, cutting off this signal should prevent the antenna from coming up.

Ok yeah I was looking to do a push button as opposed to a toggle but I want to find the right wire first. I located the relay but figured it would be best to cut it off later down the line. I'll follow up after the weekend

that was going to be my comment that you likely only need a momentary type of power switch-like the push button you said-once the antenna is powered and goes up it does not need the power again until you want it to go down.

Curious to see what you hook up-I want to do this to mine to save the wear and tear on the antennae before it wears out again.

That's what I thought thanks. With my aftermarket h/u the antenna comes on when the power is on, probably because the aftermarket harness does not have a wire designated for the antenna

Okay that is easy enough to get around-just run a power supply wire-maybe from the nearby cigarette lighter for example.

You only need the power for a second and it kind of makes sense to keep it switched on by the key.

Ok so I ended up splicing into the black and white wire (pin #7 IIRC) on the larger of the two male plugs for the stereo h/u. You guys were right about the blue wire on the aftermarket adapter harness but that was spliced into my remote wire too. By splicing into the factory plug I don't need to change anything when I decide to upgrade my h/u again either. I used wiring schematics for an '02 and they matched up so I think the procedure would be the same for '99-'02, possibly all the 3rd gens.

I used a 2 pole rocker switch and based on how the relay functions I don't believe a momentary switch would work. 18 ga. speaker wire is spliced into the antenna wire and female quick disconnects join it to the switch. Now the antenna only goes up when I push the switch when the h/u is turned on. I put a fresh coat of oil on the antenna too, I don't think it will see any use for a long time.
