Power Steering fluid leaks

ATF is typically red and smells like ATF
Toyota stuff was clear and smelled like Power steering fluid. I definitely would not have put that in my transmission.

Your right though ATF works fine. We just didn't use it at the dealer.

I know this is an old thread but don't folks bother to read the cap before they add fluids? Or are all the caps op custom aftermarket for dummies? They all clearly call for Dextron atf or equivalent on the power steering pump. Other caps are also properly marked.
On another note my Eurovan and many VWs spec a clear ATF. I believe it was call Penosil or something close. I've got an old jug of it hanging around and use it just as Junkyardbiker suggest above. Also for a hand cleaner in a pinch, ha ha...

I didn't make the trucks, I just worked on them. I'm telling you they were shipped with power steering fluid in them not atf. When we would grab Toyota labeled power steering fluid from our parts department it would be power steering fluid not atf. We would sell power steering services to clean the system. Guess what? We used power steering fluid. Put whatever you like in there, old thread don't care.

I didn't come here to debate fluids Jixxer6? Maybe I have Buick transmission caps on all my power steering pumps?

But rather I'd like to know:

did anybody ever figure out the specs on that O-ring? It would be nice to have one on hand when I take it apart.

I hate to necro an old thread again, but I can't post new ones just yet.

I definitely have a leak in my power steering somewhere, and I think it is safe to say that it is somewhere near my front, driver-side wheel (see attached). It shows up much more on the red-ish brown side of things, and wipe right off (though its dry).

First noticed the coloration right after replacing the brakes, and I assumed it was just rust getting knocked lose at the time since the brake on that wheel was barely working when I got the work done (its a long story, but I've been chasing a bunch of problems out since I graduated). It must have been the start of a very slow seepage, because it wasn't until this last cold snap that things got very bad. Topped it off a week ago, and you can already feel/hear it being lower.


Anyone know of a likely spot where it might be leaking from, in the neighborhood of where the evidence is showing up?

I have a relatively new bottle of Prestone Power Steering Fluid with leak stop in it - could I use that until I manage to track down the leak and repair it?
