Power upgrades... Best bang for your buck?

Hi all!

I just bought a 2002 SR5 V6 4x4 and I'm pretty happy about it. :trophy:

I've noticed, and read before I bought it, that it's a little under-powered. Not crippling, but I would like to take a few steps to help change that.

With that said, and as a 4runner novice with not too much time on his hands, what would you say is the best power related upgrade investment for the return?

I'll leave the question broad, feel free to expand, and thanks for your thoughts in advance.

Exhaust and intake. There isn't much else to do. You could try a computer reprogram, but I haven't seen anyone on here that has done that. Beyond that, you can go with a TRD supercharger.

This is the order I would recommend doing things.
Air Intake
Muffler
Headers
High Flow Cat

Besides that everyone else covered it. Supercharger, exhaust, intakem headers. Maybe a Piggy back ECU system.

I think he was referring to an FTC for the 7th injector. URD sells one with the 7th that controls injector duty cycle and timing re**** in open loop. no more NOS talk.

edit: apparently you can't use t.a.r.d. when talking about timing.

If you put an aftermarket cat on it will likely cause a CEL.

Just did some quick research. It seems that all this device does is act like pinwheel between your air intake and the engine....it just causes resistance. It doesn't compress the air. Don't believe the description. Buy a real supercharger.

Things I did to my 97 4Runner to get more power out of it:

K & N Cold Air Intake
Free Flowing Muffler
Adjust throttle cable - No play or slack in the cable
Lighten truck - Removed Tow Hitch, Roof rack, running boards.

*Tried a chip, but CEL kept coming on.

I found these to be the least expensive/no cost ways to get more ball out of the truck.

Didn't I read somewhere that you have headers? Whoever it was had them installed when the heads were being rebuilt I believe, thereby not incurring labor costs to install. Anybody know how much its worth on the butt dyno?
