My passenger side power window switch has not worked very well since I bought my 4 runner. Well, this week I got tired of my wife asking if the child lock was on so I decided to tear into it. I had looked at used switch panels and people wanted a more than I was willing to spend. Plus who knows if they would be functional. The unit new is a couple hundred bucks so that was out too. Most power window and lock switches I have torn apart are very similar.
Here is how I repaired the switch
I took the panel out of the door by prying up on the front of the lock/window panel. There is a metal clip that holds the front down and a tab at the rear that slides under the door panel. So lift the front up and slide forward.
Once the switch panel was out I removed the power window switch by prying the tabs out on the bottom while pushing the switch out of the bottom.
This leaves you with the actual window switch which is made of a black upper piece and a white lower piece. I removed the white lower piece by pushing in the tabs on the side while pulling it away from the upper (black) portion
This is what it looked like once it was apart.
You can see in the picture all the carbon buildup. I cleaned this off with some electrical parts cleaner and 200 grit sand paper. Put a dab of grease on the arms inside the black portion and put it back together. Works like a charm now.
