Prevent theft

Do any of you guys have a second or third switch in your car that needs to be engaged/pushed to start your truck?

I have seen quite a few stolen rigs and am considering wiring up something off of the fuel or ignition that needs to be separately engaged to start the vehicle.. Thoughts?

I don't do anything beyond the factory anti-theft items (alarm, ignition and window VIN etching and locking it) but you could put an ignition kill switch and hide the switch well. Luck and enjoy the runner. :cowboy:

Is it "easy" to steal without the transponder key? I don't know much about the factory system.

I suppose if someone really wants it they're gonna find a way but I'm mainly curious as to how much of a deterrent the transponder ignition system is. I have the factory system as well.

What's nice about most* limited models is that they require a transponder or chip key to get the ignition to turn over..... I had a key cut & had them program the chip key, but they didn't program it correctly so it never turned over. I later programmed the key myself with an existing transponder key & got it work.

Otherwise IMO, a good way to deter theft is not to have items easily seen from the windows.. the entire car is a different story & I know a guy that ALWAYS would put a wheel lock when he parked his truck... but I'm just not that paranoid. But maybe a better insurance policy is the answer or the ticket to a better nights sleep... or visit sleep train. IDK

Yeah I think the factory system is fine for my needs. I'm pretty good about making sure I don't leave valuables in the car, and at the very least not in plain sight.

I saw a guy with a 1st gen 4Runner weld tabs onto his shifters. When parked he'd shift into 4LO/Reverse and padlock them together.
 
This subject has been discussed at length in various threads.

Truth is, if someone really wants your vehicle -- they will tow the goddamn thing away in broad daylight.
 
Maybe it's just me, but I feel like people just don't lock their doors like they're supposed to because they never expect it to happen to them. So just lock your doors and don't leave valuables visible in the car.
 
I had the Lo-Jack Anti Theft system installed at the dealer when new. It was expensive but the cost was added into my monthly payments. It has alarm, vehicle recovery & starter disabler. I felt it was necessary parking on the street & living in Brentwood, Long Island. I also used the truck "Club". I dont use the Club anymore now that I live in a rural area but I always lock & engage the alarm when I park.

I had a LoJack system in my pathfinder . You have to refresh the battery in the LoJack system every year or two, so that's a continued cost of ownership

Hahahaha...I am glad I read this, I have 2 limiteds I just picked up since October and had no clue those plastic key tops were transponder keys...glad I saw this before getting some generic blanks cut to keep in my wallet. (I always kept a spare key to my Tacoma in my wallet, worked out super well when stopping by wherever my wife was parked to grab what I needed, or obviously if I locked myself out, but that would mean I lost my keys which I am way to anal to do)

I never heard of that. Mine's hard wired hidden under the rug.
 
if they want it they will get it ....no matter what you do to it
I know professional car thieves (don't ask) and they will flatbed the vehicle if it is immobilized
