Preventing paint chips from road debris (bottom of doors)

I've done some searches on paint chips and prevention methods on the board and I haven't quite come across something that I think may be applicable in this case.

The problem is, that after 110k miles, I've got a nice accumulation of paint chips on the lower edge of the door and the metal just below the doors. I'm not concerned with touching UP the paint chips, just preventing more (or more severe damage). Had I footboards along the sides, I wouldn't have this problem. But since I don't, I'm looking for ideas to prevent it (besides adding them).

So one thread mentioned a protective layer made by 3m, sold by Griot's [link]

The description says that this is to protect the inside of the door jam. I want a more permenant application to apply to the lower portion of the door and the area below it. Has anyone used this in this manner or have an alternative solution??

I don't think there's any kind of long term protection. Even the 3m clear adhesive will eventually get chewed up, and that will really look bad. I would say the best bet would be some big mud flaps. Something to help stop the debris from even hitting the paint. Even the fully enclosed running boards on the 03-05's seem to help a bit too. Other then that, I think it's pretty inevitable unfortunately.

I think the 3M film would be a good thing to try. I bought some in bulk (not from Griot's, but can't remember where) and it's easy to apply. Comes mostly in 8 mil and 12 mil thicknesses. Use the 12 mil and when it gets chewed up peel it off with a hair dryer, clean and reapply.

I did this for the rear fenders in front of the wheels on my Tacoma. It worked well, and held up just fine. However, closer to the front wheels may be rougher on the film... dunno.

perhaps get in touch with a paint shop or shop that does pick-up truck bedliners (go rhino ??? )

some dude did it to his jeep. not sure if it was this forum or another.

anywho, you can paint that layer on and you'll never have to worry about road debris ever again.
