Price for an 02 T4R

I'm looking at buying a 2002 T4R SR5 with 4WD. It only has 102k miles on it, which is why I really want it. It's also in excellent condition. The asking price is 10,500. Any ideas on how low I could talk them down? I believe it's sold at a used car dealership.

That is more than I paid for my 03, with 106K. I purchased mine from a dealership.

Check for rust, and all maintenance records first. If those all check out then 8k should be a fair price. I paid 7500 for my 02 sport edition with 144k miles and some rust.

Rust is one of the biggest, but lbjs, pink milkshake, warped rotors if it shakes while braking.

The price will vary wildly depending on condition and options.

For me to pay $10k for one it would have to be absolutely mint inside and out, almost completely unmodified (springs and shocks would be OK), and have an E-Locker. And the color would have to be right.

But that's just me. The fact of the matter is these things have become pretty desirable over the last few years, and there aren't many left that are in good shape with low miles like that, so the market is harder to predict. If the truck had 150k on it you could find some comparables and see what they went for, but that's going to be hard to do in this case.

Nice looking but doesn't look like an '02. 1) check out the a/c controls, those are not electronic. 2) look at the rear air dam thing, 02' didn't come with that mess and 3) no chrome on 02s either.

So there is your major negotiating point, they don't even know its actually older, so 'd offer $7k.

Not to dispute this, but I wouldn't count it out as being an '02 due to the above mentioned items. Just to verify, and as any car buyer should, run the VIN to verify the year and status of the vehicle. I have an '02, though mine is a sport, and it did come with the exact same climate control panel, along with the rear air dam. I believe the limited editions are the only ones that claim with the auto climate control (electronic/auto ac). In addition, I know that the Sr5 models still came with chrome bumpers, thought the limited and sports did not.

Again, just be safe and run a VIN check. I do think that $10k is high, though clean, low mileage ones are hard to come by these days. Good luck!

This is all misinformation... The only 3rd gen 4runners to come with electronic climate control from the factory are the Limited models. Also, those rear air damns were available on '02s and only limited and sport models had color matched bumpers. SR5 models still had chrome front and rear bumpers.

Just be careful, carfax is not a sure thing. They don't list all dealer records all the time (and private shops never show up) and doesn't always catch all accidents either. If you look at the car long enough you'll find evidence if it ever was in a wreck though.

My 2002 looks just as his. Chrome and manual controls for heat. Limited had the climate control

My brother-in-law drives an 02 SR5 2WD that has all three of these things... same wheels as in these pics also.

Also my 02 has the rear air dam. You're talking about the thing at the top of the rear hatch that has a hole in it to see the third brake light, right?

This is good advice...I learned the hard way. All the body panels should have a sticker with the VIN number on it somewhere. If it is missing, there is a good change that panel/door/hood had been replaced at some point.

I'm very skeptical of that mileage. In addition to the carfax and a close visual inspection, punch in the vin at toyota.com/owners you can see what service history Toyota has on it. If there was an oil change done at 160k, you know the seller is full of crap. Obviously carfax.Should catch that too, but as stated above, it doesn't always.

Why would you be skeptical of the mileage? There are tons of low mileage examples of these, plus it's a 2002 that's over 8k a year, that's pretty reasonable.
