In the end, there are many variables, but it will boil down to what you are willing to pay vs. what they are willing to part with it for. I would set a max price for what you are willing to pay. Then I would start lower so that you have some flex. Then, be prepared to walk away when they don't bend. Money goes way further for private sales.

Nice looking but doesn't look like an '02. 1) check out the a/c controls, those are not electronic. 2) look at the rear air dam thing, 02' didn't come with that mess and 3) no chrome on 02s either.

I'm looking at buying a 2002 T4R SR5 with 4WD. It only has 102k miles on it, which is why I really want it. It's also in excellent condition. The asking price is 10,500. Any ideas on how low I could talk them down? I believe it's sold at a used car dealership.

I got my 2002 limited 4wd with 160k for $7,600. And you say "I believe it's sold at a used car dealership", are you buying it online? Because it may be difficult to talk them down if you cant even inspect the car.

P.s.- it looks like it missing the cargo cover.

Yea i wasnt too sure about 2000 so i didnt add it in, but the previous years had the shorter bumper.

OP, I would go inspect the car. You should be able to tell if the mileage is true with a carfax, good inspection, and the Toyota report isn't a bad idea like someone mentioned. People here are just a little sensitive to the whole mileage thing because there's a few members that got screwed by sellers selling higher mileage trucks with swapped clusters to show a lower mileage, but the fact of the matter is most trucks don't have this issue.

If you can get them down a little on price that would be good, but in the end the truck is worth what you're willing to pay. The price is a little high, but not too bad. At barely over 100k miles that truck has so much life left in it. I got mine at 142k miles, and it's been trouble free since then. I'm at 168k now and wouldn't hesitate to drive it around the world if needed.

If it seems like the right truck for you then paying a little extra for it is OK in my book. In the end you aren't talking about tens of thousands of dollars, you're talking maybe 1 or 2 for something that should last you for a very long time.

I tend to agree. And by buying one with mileage that low, you can avoid some repairs down the road due to unknown history. I bought mine with 170k on it, and no real maintenance records. It runs fine, but I've replaced a lot of stuff that probably didn't need it just because I had no idea if they were original or not. I'm in the middle of ball joints and tie rod ends right now, and none of them really look like they needed to be replaced so I suspect they're not original parts, but I still didn't know if they were OEM so I didn't have full confidence in them. Same thing goes for the timing belt and water pump. I have no idea when mine were last replaced so I'm doing them now.

On a truck with 100k on it you can pretty much count on everything being original equipment, and assuming it has had the timing belt changed at least once you're not going to have to do much to it other than change the oil and grease the chassis for a good long while.

I'm very skeptical of that mileage. In addition to the carfax and a close visual inspection, punch in the vin at toyota.com/owners you can see what service history Toyota has on it. If there was an oil change done at 160k, you know the seller is full of crap. Obviously carfax.Should catch that too, but as stated above, it doesn't always.

My '96 has 106,400 miles on it. Bought new so it's definitely accurate. I don't think low mileage 4Runners are all that unusual.

There is a body shop / dealer near me that has a 01 limited. I don't know mileage but they have 11,900 for the price. They are smoking some serious ganja. It's been there for almost a year now.

So there is your major negotiating point, they don't even know its actually older, so 'd offer $7k.

Holy cow, 02's still fetch $10k +? I'd just assume buy one with deferred maintenance since I don't trust the PO actually performed the work and I'd end up replacing the high dollar items anyway.

I paid $4,800 for my 02 SR5 4x4 Sport Edition, and have about $1,500 sunk into maintenance to bring it up to snuff. I'd also never buy from a dealer since you have to pay tax/title/license while private party transactions are exempt from this extra ~10% cost.

If it were me, I'd fire up Searchtempest.com and set my search radius to the Southwest USA. I'd then find the cosmetically cleanest, private party 4x4 4runner I could. Body work is $$$, mechanical issues less so. I'd then run a Carfax to weed out salvage title trucks and confirm mileage.

Next, I'd fire off an offer about 10-20% below my max shopping budget. So figure a truck listed at $6k, I'll offer $5k. I'd also point out to the seller that I'd be flying and driving the truck home. Hopefully they'd be able to knock a few bucks off for this.

Then, after finding the perfect truck and haggling out a price, I'd send a refundable deposit via PayPal. Be sure to send it as payment for an item, not service. PayPal doesn't cover deposits as it's technically a service rendered. I'd make sure the seller knows the deposit is refundable, get it in writing. I'd have them agree to hold the vehicle for 5 days. Next, I'd hop on Google Flights, pick the cheapest flight within the next 3-5 days and go pick up my new baby!

This is exactly how I bought my last three vehicles, and I couldn't be happier with them!

Edit: Technically, the first two vehicles were drive n' drive as I drove with my wife to pick them up and then we took two cars home. But, now that I've done a fly n' drive, I'd probably never do it any other way. Don't limit your search to your own town. Southwest USA has consistently the best condition vehicles in the continental 48.

It's not the year, it's the mileage. These things are hard to find with less than 150k on them now, and they're bringing big money. At that mileage the only real maintenance you have to worry about being performed by the PO would be the timing belt, and there will probably be documentation for that.

As far as the tax/title/license, that depends on the state. Some of them hit you for the tax when you title the vehicle. It cost me about $450 to title mine in FL, and I paid $4000 for it.

I bought this 1 family owned 02 with only 87k miles for $5800 this past December. It needed a r/r axle seal and rear brake shoes to pass state inspection. Undercarriage is solid and no fluid leaks, it runs/drives great. Only thing that doesn't work is the sunroof doesn't open. I never buy vehicles from dealers, i prefer buying from private sellers.
