Problem With Supercharger...

Well guys, I have been living in ignorance for awhile now... All is not well for me and my supercharger.

I am having an issue where sometimes (quite rarely) when I am just cruising around, if I press the accelerator, my wideband gauge will lean out to a point it does not even register (past 18.1) until the exact moment I enter boost, the URD MAF kicks in and richens it back up. When it is leaning out, the 4Runner acts as if it's getting no fuel at all, has no power, and kinda lugs about. More often then not, this happens when I run for the first time in the day.

The problem was most prominent on my recent trip down HWY 101 to California.

Cruising up rather steep hills at 55mph puts me at right around 1700 rpm, which means if I want to hold that speed, my engine enters boost, and richens up. When I would crest the hill, I would lean way out (past 18.1) until I entered boost again, where it would again kick in the URD box and become more rich. I know, that is normal, HOWEVER, say if that hill led up to a plateau, when I would be cruising on top of the plateau for hypothetically 10 miles, if I gave it a little gas to speed up some, it would just lean out, unless I mashed it to enter boost. When it happens once, I can pretty much count on it happening for the rest of the day, or at least until I stop driving for a couple hours

It is to the point where I don't want to drive my 4runner far from home. Not because I am afraid of it breaking down, but rather because it makes me so angry that it's not working properly.

My signature has my fuel upgrades listed, but for ... giggles I will list them.

I read that twice just to make sure I understood what you were describing.

AFAIK, the URD controllers use a MAP sensor located inside the URD ECU itself. I know for sure the 7th injector unit uses this sensor, but I'm not 100% sure about the 6-injector controller.

In your case, that URD box is controlling all 6 of your injectors, so were that MAP sensor to start malfunctioning, I can easily see it causing the issue you are describing.

For instance, if that MAP sensor is "sticking" and not registering the smaller (smallest) increases in manifold pressure, it is not going to tell the injectors to kick on and start supplying fuel. It sounds like that's the case, but when you're hitting it with the larger changes in MAP (manifold absolute pressure) it's seeing that and acting normally.

I'm not familiar with the 6 injector controller, but those are my thoughts.

If I were you I'd be on the phone with Gadget first thing in the morning.

Thanks for your response man, I appreciate it.

I do not think that my MAF/FTC operates the same way as your AIC/Timing Calibrator. I could be wrong, but I don't think what you mentioned applies to me.

As far as calling Gadget. Generally when I call him I leave feeling like an idiot, and asking my wife for a few hundred dollars as the conversation usually goes "What year is your truck? A 99? Well, perhaps you should get the 7th injector kit. It's better." It seems that no matter my response, the answer is always to spend $900 dollars on his kit, and another $100 on stock injectors.

I will give it a shot, as I have not tried with this problem.

Just ask him casually if the 6 injector controller uses a MAP sensor... as in "Hey, I was just wondering if....." If he tells you that it does, I'd press him for some details, such as who manufactures the sensor.

If the answer is yes, I'd start looking into how often that manufacturer's MAP sensors actually have issues.

Gadget wears many hats, he is the owner/operator, the sales guy, but most importantly, the customer service guy. His first job as an entrepreneur is always going to be to UPSELL you. If you press him though, and let him know that is not an option and what you want is for your current product to work, it is his responsibility to help you achieve that goal.

I will give that a shot. Thanks for the help man.

i personally think you are in over your head and you should just get rid of that runner, its a problem runner if you ask me, its been through 3 SCs in under 100k miles! you need a more reliable 4runner like a stock one/ i could take your to my father inlaw, im sure he could get it running acceptable. it would require some bit of tinkering and playing with, but im ok with doing that and going though all that work. but you shouldnt have to. you need a vehicle with less issues, like my wifes yaris :hiding: :bigok:

Haha, the first charged was replaced because the nose rattled after like 2k miles. The second dripped some oil or something, I forget what the log says. Not big deal breaking issues for me =p I am surprised they even replaced it.

I'll throw this out there also... just yank the S/C and I'll trade you straight across for that JAOS skid?

Whattaya say? My '97 needs some go-fast too.

I'll trade you cash for it, no SC though =)

A friend I am speaking with has suggested perhaps my MAF is going out... Is there a way to test such things? Would make sense to me...

You never know unless you ask, right?

Please follow up on this thread though, I'm interested to see what the problem is and how you get it fixed.

There should be a test procedure in the FSM... measuring resistance and what not. Although, I would think that if your MAF sensor was having issues, your probems wouldn't be happening "quite rarely".

Since we're playing the guessing game now, what about the Throttle Position Sensor? If it's not reading that initial throttle input, it could also give you these issues. Throttle plate begins opening (but not sensed by ecu) = no additional input of fuel = lean condition, ecu re****s timing... bada bing, bada boom?

well toyota recommends they get changed out every 80-100k... they can be bad without throwing a code. and your engine being SCd will be much more sensitive to that issue. id say replace the front one and see what happens. i was thinking about your o2 sensor possibly being at fault here...
