Problem with Tundra Brakes!!!

Ok so its not really much of a problem, but its really annoying now that i've noticed and i don't want it to lead to an issue...

So my "problem" is that when I'm in reverse, I have this clunk coming from the brakes (my best guess, only thing i've changed in the last few weeks... make that months) EVERY TIME I press the brake pedal.

PLEASE HELP! Any input helps!

Did you use factory brake pads & backing plates? I don't know the correct name but the little metal plates you put on the back of the brake pad to help with noise.

Did you install the spring thingy correct? That helps with the clunk or the rocking of the brake pads when you put it in reverse.

yes, that was the springy thing I was talking about. Retainer clip sounds better though.

Used all tundra parts for the 231 setup, and I was a bit confused when installing the w spring thing. Do you happen to have a picture of how it is supposed to go?

the clip should go on top. the top slide pin goes through it and you may have to press down v part in the middle. on the bottom of the pin one side is J and the other side is L goes in the holes in the inside of the back of the pad. Hope this helps. What you are hearing is the pad slide up and down in the caliper. the M clip just acts as an anit rattle clip.

check your caliper bolts... i had an odd clunk a while while back when i would press on the brakes, and then when id let of, noticed it more at low speeds. anyhow turned out that my right caliper bolts(the two big ones that hold the caliper to the spindle) had some how come lose... took them out, cleaned up the threads, and the threads in the spindle and then re installed them making sure they were tight and that fixed the issue

I've checked all the main bolts so my guess is the clip. Probably just installed them wrong. I'll get that done tomorrow and let you guys know. Thanks for all the help!

You know what, I was having minor clunking as well and for some reason, each of my calipers came with 2 retaining "M" clips, so I used 2 on each brake. It stopped the clunking.

do you know if we can get just the M (or W) spring by itself? I have the same clunk and would like to install two springs as well.

contact local part store and ask for retaining clips. Should be able to get pins and clips from like napa or somewhere like that but if not hit me up and i can maybe get toyota part numbers. tacomas and 4runners have only one but guess the tundra set up is larger so maybe needs 2 but glad you got it fixed.

I'm having the same issue so I decided to contact the dealership to see if I could just the sping clip, but they gave me bad info. $??? from dealership, $2.70 Toyota Parts Overstock.com, which was the first thing to pop up when I googled the part number (477480C010). For that price I'm going double it up like Brian suggested. Fingers crossed and good luck.

Ok guys, so the clips didn't fix it, but they did help! So my best guess is the bolts now so I'll check, and clean (just in case) the bolts, holes and mount points.

Make sure you caliper bolts are tight. The bolts thread in farther into the spindles with the tundra vs 4runner calipers. I put my tundra calipers on and they felt like they tightened down. I even torqued them down. Luckily I noticed they were loose. I had to clean out the threads. After I cleaned the threads I could tighten them down all the way and get an accurate torque reading. Just a heads up.

Did you check how much you round off the dust sheild? Looks like you had more than enough space top and bottom.

I added a second set of m clips to my calipers. So now there's two on each side. My front end is SOO much quieter now. At the same time i applied brake grease to the guide pins.

Before i was also getting a loud cluck the first time i applied the brakes going reverse. this made that clunk get much quieter. still there but very faint.

I was just about to suggest a little grease. Although, I have the two retaining clips per side, I've greased contact points, made sure everything was properly torqued and tight and I still have a very light reverse clunk. (can't hear it over a normal talking voice)
