Problems/Issues with the 2014 4runner

And what if I'm driving a more or less flat grade, which is where I most frequently notice it. Or approaching a light changing to red and I'm coasting to a stop? I would most welcome any serious responses.

no offense meant to anyone... my line of work is quality assurance so the smallest problem is a problem nonetheless. I dont mean this thread to be a ding against toyota. it should in fact help the toyota quality control people.
You are limited in the build by zip code. as I understand it different regions buy/order vehicles in different colors/trim combos. For example in Oregon you can't buy a 2WD 4Runner, but they have lots of them in Arizona. I suspect this applies to exterior color. Just a guess.

If you're coasting down between ~40 and ~35 mph, this is a 5-4 downshift, perfectly normal. It seems some 4Rs act differently than others, but in mine this was quite noticeable, and I found it distracting.

In steady-state driving in this 35-40 range, mine would also hunt between 5-4-5, which I did not like. Another characteristic was while turning a corner, getting back on the gas, the trans just seemed to get lost between 1-2.

There is a TSB for the latter behaviour, which I had applied and improved (not fixed) both of these oddities.

I'll look for it...

Here's the number and description: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-g...ws-tranny-lag-new-tsb-fixes-3.html#post582242

I don't know if a hard copy was ever posted. The TSB is for "hard shifting...." but noticeably improved my trans' behaviour.

Forgot to post here but they told me it was my tires rubbing the plastic mud flaps that was making this noise. I am pretty sure it's not but they checked everything they could and all was tight. I know the sound it's making and it doesn't sound anything like rubbing tires.

Since this was their diagnosis, they charged me for the apt as it was not under warranty.

I'm running standard size tires so I am confused. Hoping it eventually goes away and doesn't cause problems

Does it sound/feel like the rear shocks are blown or a sway is disconnected? I've noticed the suspension "rattling" around in low speed turns. I chalked it up to the Duratracs but now I'm wondering.

I would say yes, it sounds exactly like that

Nose dive braking at very low speeds. Design issue I suspect. Not going to worry about it. An annoyance I can live with.

Poor interior lighting. I can read a book inside my '06 Avalon.

First time Toyota owner-brand new one week old 2014 TE with the Premium package. I have been noticing a "clunky" downshift at approximately 35-40 mph when I take my foot off the gas pedal. Transmission downshifts, vehicle compression brakes and then tach will momentarily surge in the new lower gear. It takes longer to describe it then to actually take place. Reminds me of a driver that is new to manual transmissions that overuses the downshift to get a braking effect.

Example: driving a parkway with a speed limit of 35 mph, look down and notice I am running about 42 mph and approaching a common speed trap for radar. So the foot momentarily comes off the gas to scrub a minimum of speed and voila -- instant downshift, engine brake and tach surge.

Anybody else notice this?

I notice this on mine sometimes. I think mostly from the 4-3 downshift for me. I assumed it was normal, it's not harsh or anything, just... noticeable. Happens up hill, down hill flat. I don't think the car can really tell what your nose attitude is, just that your speed is decreasing with your foot off the gas and at some point it has to downshift...

Depending on your road conditions, traffic etc, you may just run into the right set of circumstances to notice it often...

The stock interior bulbs are crap!! I replaced 5 bulbs with LED's and it has changed everything. go to superbrightleds.com and order replacment for map lights and dome light...those 3 bulbs change the game. I also did the two in the tailgate and they cast out amazing light when open.

So Far So Good

Just picked up a 2014 SR5 Premium and drove 200 miles home.
Comfortable ride, feels big, handled well.

Still have my 2007 which is just shy of 80K.
The '14 doesn't have a console fold out which I used a fair amount in the '07, but one thing that erks me is not having any door panels in the rear storage areas. Things just roll around and pop out if they're not held down.
Not big deals, but they also too away the second visor and locking gas door.

All windows are auto up and down and outside mirrors are heated. Would've been nice if they had auto folding also.
Pwr seats on both fronts and lumbar support for driver.
Lots of airbags up front for knees and most other body parts.

The electronics are very good although it will take me some time to learn everything. The phone calling/answering from the steering wheel is a nice option along with all of the other bluetooth options.

I wasn't as happy with the dip the truck takes when stopping. The front dips and then comes back. Nothing big, but my '07 seemed much ----firm shall I say.

Changing oil is a major PIA. After removing a couple of bolts and a small access panel to get to the drain plug, which is not big deal, you have to remove several bolts to take off two skid plates to get to the filter housing.
The dealer service guys said they have broken tons of bolts changing oil on these.
My '07 filter was under the hood. 1/2hr total to change oil on that one.

Oil is 0W-20 with a 5000 change interval.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the '14 so far and that's probably from all of the creature comforts. Compared to the '07, it feels much bigger but feels comfortable and safe.
22.4 MPG on the maiden trip. The '07 usually got 24 MPG so I think that's fine.

This is one of the last real frame on SUV's. The Pathfinder went to the Morano chassis.
Still has the rear glass that goes up and down which I use a lot, but you can't do it from your key fob anymore.
On the '07 you just touched the key over to start and let go. It started on its own from there. The '14 you hold the key just like most other cars have been. Not bad, just different.

ps: I learned what "puddle lights" were

Congrats on your new ride. Where in MN are you located?

Are you saying you use 0W-20 in your 07 and change it at every 5k? Or refering to your 14' which uses 0W-20 and is factory recommended to change out every 10k... Not 5K. Unless you fall under what they call "Special Operating Conditions".

Your 5k should just be the floor mat check, checking fluid levels, rotate tires and inspect the brakes...

Special Operating Conditions (according to the 10-13 service manual) suggest you change the oil every 5K if you are driving on dirt or dusty roads often, towing or heavy vehicle loading, and something like extensive idling or low speed driving.

Jim,
You are correct. Near Hibbing, I do live on a (short) dirt road and dirt driveway. I also pull a boat (or will IF the ice ever goes out).
I certainly could change oil at more than 5k, but my old school mind keeps me there. Who knows, in time I may go to 7k....
And, I do not use the 0w20 in the '07.

I've been having a recurring strange issue - my backup camera stays on after I put the truck in drive and continue. I"m due for an oil change shortly so I will ask about a software update. Anyone else have this? I actually wouldn't mind the ability to keep it on all the time.

I've had my '14 LE for about 3 months now and absolutely love it!
Two "features" I wish it had. 1) Blind Spot monitoring, 2) Power folding mirrors like our Tundra has.

My only complaint so far is Navigation. This past weekend was this T4R's first road trip. The navigation would lock up the entire entune system after it would tell me a specific direction to take. The map would either be completely blank, or be stuck at the last position.
For several miles it also showed me 3 miles east of the interstate on the map blowing through houses, schools and the like at 80mph. I did hold the power knob and each time that would reset it if it hadn't "unfroze" on it's own. Yesterday driving home the entire unit rebooted itself 3 times, and then it "reset" all of my navigation preferences to default and so far all seems well again. If it happens again I will have the dealer look into it at next oil change since I will also be having them change some of the defaults (roll windows down with fob, etc).

Does sound like the nav computer doesn't want to play well with other.
Let us know what the dealer does/says.

My wife is the primary driver, things she doesnt like in the first month of driving it is the hiss squish the brake pedal makes, and the way high winds blow it around on the expressway.
Other than that she thinks its the coolest thing ever.

So did mine. Get your alignment checked, and have the caster set to +4 deg.

No total transformation, but it made a big difference.

I have this issue as well...I think I will try a alignment check. I will suggest the +4 caster but what should say is the reason for the 4+? Any info would be helpful
Thanks

Dealer connected my iPhone, got home signed up for entune apps and now when i start the truck it says connected then disconnects. What the heck?

2014 TE P 2 Issues

1. 3 Nav/Radio reboots while driving.
2. Yellow alert light flickered twice after starting up. Too fast to catch the message but I suspect it held over after disengaging the parking break.

Will report more if anything else happens.

Relay Clicking Sound? (steering column area)

One thing I have noticed on my 2014 Trail is a clicking sound coming from around the steering column area. This is when I hear it: I start the car, put it in Reverse & back out, put it in Drive, begin to drive away and that's when it happens. It's pretty much like clockwork so I figure it's probably ok and there are no other secondary indications. Also, if I put the the car back in Park, then back to Drive (to try to reproduce the sound) I do not hear the sound. Like I mentioned earlier it is only after starting the car, placing it in Drive, etc.
It is not a very loud noise, but it is definitely easy to hear. Not a "chattering relay" sound either, but instead a one time "click." I initially worried that there might be some pinching of a wiring harness in the steering column area since it was happening when I was turning the wheel, but I tried the whole sequence in a parking lot, without ever turning the wheel and it happened. Has anyone heard this noise too?
