Problems/Issues with the 2014 4runner

My 2014 SR5 makes two interesting noises.

One noise is when you push on the brake pedal. It's a soft sound, somewhere between a whistle, a whoosh, and a scrape. Occurs just when you begin to press the pedal and lasts maybe a second. The brakes are working fine.

The other noise I heard when I pulled up to the fuel pump and opened the gas tank cap. From inside the gas tank there was a continuous and rather loud rumble/rattle (the engine was on at that time). The tank was about a quarter full. I filled it up and the noise was gone when I pulled the nozzle out.

I'll poke around the brake pedal when I get a chance, maybe something is undergreased and as to the gas tank, I'm not sure -- maybe it's some newfangled emission system working there?

Functionally everything works, no trouble lights, no leaks, no nothing.

The noise you hear when pushing on the brake pedal is common to all 5th Gens and is part of the panic bake application "feature". Do a search and you'll find many posts about the squish sound. Hit the brake pedal quickly and you'll find out about the panic break application feature.

I would suspect what you are hearing with the gas cap removed when the engine is running is the fuel returning to the tank from the fuel pump. Modern fuel injected engines maintain constant fuel pressure using a pressure regulator and relief valve that returns fuel to the tank. The tank is also slightly pressurized which is sensed by the system and will cause a trouble code if the cap is not tight (part of the vapor recovery system). You'll also hear a sound coming from the rear of the vehicle after it has been turned off for a short period (also can be found with a search of this forum) which is part of the vapor recovery system).

That noise from the brakes is the brake booster pump. 4runners have been making that noise since '03.

apparently you have never lived in a state when it gets colder than -20/-40F with 20mph winds and trying to fill a gas tank.

you dont stand outside fueling, you get back in the driver/passenger seat until the pump clicks off.

and remember, wind chill affects more than just skin, it affects anything giving off heat.

Never worried about it. Figured it was normal

Up in canada the gas tabs have been removed and most places will turn off the pump if your vehicle is running

I've filled up in Canada many times. My engine was always running and no one ever turned off the pump.

There is a high-pitched whistling noise that comes from the area of the side-view mirrors, most noticeable at around 40 m.p.h. It's been present on all three 2014 SR5's that I've driven. There is a thread on the issue on the next page - the OP has a TE and is experiencing the same problem. Everyone who hears it should notify their dealers and/or Toyota USA so a TSB can be created. Fingers crossed for a fix.

However, I have an actual issue to report:

My 2014 T4R LE is making a noise when I turn off the engine. There is a small blower/pump on the passenger side front that is making the noise. Anyone know what that is?

I just watched the first video, and that sound is the Air Injection Pump, that was introduced on the 4runners in the 2013 MY. When you turn off the 4nr, the pump reverses in attempt to blow out any moisture that could have gotten in it, which is what caused alot of failures in the past (on the tundras). You can thank California for this crappy AIP system that takes up alot of space, as well as adds alot of junk to your engine, and blocks access to your spark plugs. And it is expensive to replace if/when it fails....

Yes, I am amazed at how loud it is. I wonder if mine is abnormally loud? Its kinda embarrassing when I turn the truck off and it sounds like a vacuum cleaner turning off...

Of course Toyota will says that's expected behavior in that vehicle. I sure hope it is helping the environment as its probably some shortcut to meet emission standards.

Steering wheel chatter

2014 LE - Anyone notice a slight steering wheel chatter/vibration at slow speed? Wondering if its an intermediate shaft tolerance issue?

Front end shakes over 60 mph

Less than 300 miles on my new baby and the front end right side is shaking severely when I drive over 60 MPH. Guess I'm going to the dealership next week. Hope it's just a wheel balance issue. I've read some more serious drive shaft issues with older 4runners. Hoping for the best outcome.

Are you feeling strange bumps and thumps through the steering wheel almost as if something in the suspension is loose (low speeds only)? I have this on my 2012 and it sucks! I'm pretty sure its the intermediate steering shaft as you have stated. This has been a problem on a couple of other Toyota vehicles. I took mine in to get it fixed and they said they could not replicate it (was 90% sure this is what they would say) Anyways, I have found at least one thread that has a few fixes from other vehicles (Tacoma and 4th gen 4runner). I'm not on that computer right now, but I can get the link if you would like to see it. My 4Runner had a few issues out of the gate, but this one takes the cake. Makes it feel like some critical suspension component is about to give way. Not a good feeling!

for those looking to get the LE with the rounded black corners running boards with chrome strip, be advised that the width of the board is not sufficient. the rocker panel impedes placement compare to the TE and SR5 where there is a gap that would let you snuggle your foot in for an extra 1-2 inches.

at this point the running boards are more cosmetic than functional in my opinion. the Warden has already slipped her foot off trying to get in the other night.
