Problems programming spare master key

Hey folks,
I have a 'new' 2004 Limited that unfortunately came with only a single master key. Searched the magic net (including this forum) for procedures to program a spare (I do have correct transponder blank that was cut at the dealer). The key was costly enough, so wanted to dodge the ridiculous dealer programming cost. Came up with varying procedures....tried them all this evening with no success. Even tried deleting all (except master being used) .....but that did not work either!

Is there any truth to being able to program additional master keys without an external device (dealer or locksmith)......or are all these 'methods' simply BS??? Maybe urban legend???? HAHHAHA

If anyone been able to program a 2004 Limited 4Runner spare master key successfully.....please share the specific procedure used.
Hope someone out there can help me save some programming cost.
Thanks!!

AFAIK your only real option is at a locksmith. It's not the same as programming a keyless entry that you can do yourself. I guess you could try one of those programmer doohickys from ebay or wherever that is supposed to program any key, but that seems like a long shot to me. The key should only be like $15 bucks and you should be able to get a locksmith to program it for $50 or so. The dealer probably wants $100 to do it.

When I went thru my key nonsense I was told by the stealership key rep that only ONE key can be the master... at least thats the line they sold me..

i don't know...I think that up to 4 keys can be programmed as a master key at once, if "master" means not valet. And you're right that if you lose all your keys then you are really fuct.

As i just went through this i was told ONLY 1 master key can be programmed per car computer, 2 slave keys, and a valey key... or something to that effect, the car's computer only allows 4+/- keys to be programmed in total at one time.
Slave keys act just like master keys, but you can NOT program any new keys from a slave key, ALL programming must be done from the master key.
This is what the stealership told me, and believe me after i went through all this i tried to have A WHOLE BUNCH of master keys programmed, and they said it cant be done. i ended up spending $300 + on all this key crap!

Hide your master key in a safe!!!

Mandomaniac, Now that im thinking, you might want to go to the dealership and double check that the ONE key you have is the actual master key! If it was the master key, you would be able to "reprogram" or "program" additional "slave keys" from it.
Vehicles get turned in to the dealerships missing keys all the time, AND SALESMEN LIE!!

Actually mando, this is the same exact thing i went thru!
Def make sure you have the master key!
