Problems with JBL Stereo

Hi all,

I have a 2004 Sport Edition 4WD 4Runner with the V6. For about 3 years now the JBL Toyota Stereo 56836 has worked intermittently. At times there is no sound at all. Other times there is a ton of static over the music that garbles the sound. At other times, when the stereo is off, the same static noise comes through the speakers anytime the ignition is in the ACC or IN position. I recorded the static and analyzed it with Adobe Audition. The static is full spectrum, with distinct and defined patterns in the tweeter, bass ans subwoofer ranges.

The only way I have been able to stop the noise is by removing the ACC fuse. When I do though I lose the power mirrors and the ability charge via the cigarette lighter.

Has anyone else run into this problem? I don't know if it's a bad amp, located in the righ rear of the vehicle, or the in-dash unit. I've inquired at several mobile audio shops and they just want to replace the entire audio system including the speakers, subwoofer,etc.. They claim the factory ones are not compatible with any aftermarket equipment.

I really don't want to replace the in-dash unit as we live in a high crime area and those units draw too much attention from thieves.

Has anyone had a similar experience to ours? Suggestions?

I would be happy to just be able to connect an iPhone for music and to get the power mirrors and charger back.

I have a 56827 which is the same radio sitting in my garage if you want to replace yours. $50 plus shipping and it is yours.

Have you pulled the radio to see any of the connections are loose?

I haven't done that yet. I'm not really familiar with how to remove it. I'll need to do some research. Thanks for the suggestion.

+1 any other input or resolution. I am having the exact same problem but it started with seemingly no changes (was rockin out, went for dinner, started the car and now there is the crazy static)

Nothing seems to chAnge the static except if you turn radio on and up it gets louder (no music will play)
Not affected by other electric circuits
Not chAnged with radio on/off, am/fm/cd disc/no disc

Anyone else ever reach a resolution/find a solution?

I believe I have actually solved the problem I was having. I opened up the dashboard to remove the stereo and take it to a local shop to have it diagnosed for problems. During the process I replaced the burned out bulbs in the center display for the AC/Heater, outside temp etc. They had been burning out one at a time for the past 3 years. Once the bulbs were replaced I received a business call and had to stop where I was. Once finished it was dark and I didn't want to try to remove the stereo in the dark. So I put everything back together....

To my shock, everything is working fine now for the past 10 days. No issues with the stereo at all. This makes absolutely no sense to me, but for the time being it appears that one or more of those burned out bulbs was causing the problem with the stereo.

UPDATE: The static noise has now returned after about 5 weeks of everything working correctly. So I removed the radio today. Once I had everything back together I put the AUX fuse back in and the static pulsing noise is still there as soon as I turn the key to Auxiliary position. The pattern of the static changes with the engine on.

The only other thing I can think of it the noise is from the amplifier. I'm going to research ow to disconnect that next.

I found this technical service bulletin from Toyota that sounds just like the problem I am having. It is for a 2003 model, but the problem is the same.

Does anyone know if the amplifier has its own fuse? If so, then I can try pulling the fuse to see if the problem goes away I stead of having To tear into the cargo area to get to the amp.

If the amp proves to be the problem, has anyone found an inexpensive replacement for the factory amp?

I found the PDF at the link below showing fuse #18, under the hood, controls the Radio only. I will try to disconnect that and see if it kills the noise instead of using fuse 44 which turns off a bunch of other systems.
