Production Totals...by color

Does anyone have any info about 4runner production totals by year, color, and model? I've seen the "spreadsheet" floated around here every now and then with YTD production totals, but it never had any detailed information with it.

Reason I ask is that I've decided to go after a 2014 trail edition. And I'd like to get a general idea about the uphill fight I may be up against to find one close to what I'm looking for (yes I know I can order one). Anyways, it being a trail, it's already rare, and the fact that I live in Texas makes it even rarer (Swamped in a sea of 4X2s and limiteds). Could someone in the know help a guy out?

I would have put this in the 2014 thread, but I get the idea it probably would have gone unnoticed among all the oversized picture's and bashing of the pig/predator like front-end.

when I picked my allocation using my dealers computer screen (website), he pulled up his model and color inbound numbers screen. the popular colors and models had higher numbers than the oddball ones. some showed 1 or 0 on the low ones and 2-3 on the high ones.

(forgot to add, if you use the dealers allocations, your not bound to buy since technically its not a special order. but you do have to wait longer as in my case I have to wait until November or December before it arrives.)

if they are nice they can bring up that same webpage to show you that dealers inbound allocation and quantities or you could look at the sold/onhand/inbound board that every Toyota dealer has.

that could be some of your options. I've even had them flatbed my 2004 v8 sport 500 miles for a dealer transfer. it cost me less than $500 for this service from my dealer back then. ymmv

now don't let my example give you any ideas since I have known my new car gm and the main finance lady for at least 10-15 years and have bought many new Toyota's from them during this time frame, so I get some some perks above the normal joe's.

I will give you some estimates as what you want is probably not public knowledge.

The 5th gen 4Runner is currently selling about 50K units a year. Of those, around 6% are TE's, or around 3K units a year.

Silver, White and Black are the most popular colors. Grey is next followed by everything else. These are general numbers for all vehicles so I would think the 4Runner would follow the norm. If memory serves me, the top three colors would sell about 70% of the 3K, or 2,100 units. I would now assume the Grey would sell the next 20% or so so that would be 600 units. Blue and Red would sell probably 300 units/year total.

These are assumptions only mixed with a little fact. Use it how you see fit!

the original location in the north end of town is now a city dry cleaner in the front uhaul in the back. then they move to the middle of town which combined with the chevy dealer then broke away to the south location which is now a Toyota/scion/dodge/Chrysler dealer.

just a bit of info on the NB color, its practically black at night and dark unless in sunlight. so if you hate black and the issues it has paint wise, you will have the same issues. trust me, I hate my warden's NB Tacoma for this reason, but she hates silver as much as I hate really dark colors.


edit : try cars.com, it will help a lot in narrowing down color/model/location for a starting point.

Discalimer: I'm in my early 20's and this is my first new vehicle. (Would have gone used, but these sun-of-guns just don't depreciate enough to make it worth it...and add to the fact the rarity)

I think my best bet is to pay a visit or notify all the massive dealers here in town, and then put out a few emails/phone calls to some of the smaller dealerships around my stomping grounds and Alma Mater. I'm sure I'll find about what I'm looking for, but I'm not about to shell out my to get the exact color/options I'm looking for. We shall see.

I am looking forward to this though. I've been researching for over a year on different vehicles. And after many test drives, irrational dreams of sports coupes, and many reviews read, I kept coming back to the 4runner. It's like a virus or something. This site may have had some influence on that.

I currently have a very similar in color Dodge Dakota. Love it when it's clean, but every other day it can be a blight. I know what I'd be getting into with the blue, I'm just trying figure out if it's worth the effort. By the looks of those figures, I'd say no. I should stick to my gut and go Silver or White. My sweat glands will probably thank me 10 months out of the year for that too.

Are you in Houston? Back in 2010 I bought my TE from Sterling McCall Toyota. They had several TEs on their lot when pretty much no one else in TX did. That was 3 years ago and I'm sure you've checked them out, but thought I'd mention it.

Sometimes I wish I had gotten Shoreline Blue....unfortunately I think they are the rarest of the rare when it comes to the Trail. I don't think its even offered in 2014 which is a bummer.

I am. I've been all over the big dealerships inventory listed on every website possible. There are a few white one's in the area that I intend on going to look at. I talked to a few Houston owners, and they mentioned that the TE's were significantly easier to find in 2010 than in the later years (Nobody really knew what they had or the significance of the difference, according to these fellas). They pop up every now and then, and it looks like a few white and silvers are headed this way. I have next week off, so I plan on using some of that time to find one.

I know what you mean. There's a lifted Shoreline blue TE that lives in my complex. Nice looking truck. I'm partial to the Salsa Red pre-2014 model, but as with the Shoreline, that's now a discontinued color. If I find a NB Trail, I very well might jump on it, but I'm going to have to sleep on the decision a few nights.

For those wondering:

Talked to 3 dealers; all 3 mentioned there are no Trail editions (w/kdss as an option) coming to Texas, or any other dealer within the region for several months, if at all. Special ordering is your only option. So, it looks like I'm going to be getting which ever color I really want. Decisions.... Decisions.

lol someone is jerking your chain. I did a quick lookup on cars.com and the first TE/TE Prem I see is from Alamo Toyota in San Antonio.

mike shaw Toyota (Corpus Christi) has a classic silver, MGM, and white

texas Toyota (Grapevine, TX) has a black.

do advance search based on dallas texas and out to 250 miles and I can find 19 te/te prem's.

It's not that they didn't have a Trail edition, it's that they didn't have one with KDSS. The dealers I visited all had Trails sitting on the lot.

You could always buy a $200 plane ticket to Phoenix. The inventory website here in phoenix shows 13 TE's, all with KDSS. 7 Regular TE's and 6 Premium TE's. When I bought mine back in April, I negotiated everything through email. I guess if you had a trade-in that would make it a bit more difficult. Good luck on your search.

Considered that. I'm fine with a 6-8 week wait, rather than having to deal with going out of state/region. I've got a couple dealers pitted against each other right now. We'll see who wins, come Friday. In the meantime layball:
