Programming a key

I bought a key off Amazon and will have it cut. I will need to get it programmed. Does anyone know of options that would let me program it? I have Carista, but I don't think that can do it. I have heard of a procedure that is simple for earlier generations. I believe on 5th gen I need Tech Stream software, and there are many threads about ancient OS's needed to run it.

Does anyone know what the most straight forward method I could do is, that does not involve spending $$$$ at the dealer? If there is a proven cable/software just point me to it and I'll use that.

There are threads about keys and programming you can search for. I don't think you can do it with any available program. I believe the dealer uses a Toyota program that uses the vehicles VIN number. As a result they charge a hefty price for doing it. Replacement keys are made using the little key code tag that comes with the vehicle. However, dealer charges may vary. That's one reason it's a good idea (if buying used) to make sure you get all 3 keys (2 regular and 1 valet). Now there are some things you can program with techstream (that runs on XP) and or Carista is to program some functions that happen when you unlock or lock your vehicle; but not programming the key to the vehicle its self.
 
I used a techstream cable I purchased from Amazon to program my new key along with an old Windows XP laptop that I used just for techstream. I surfed around the internet to find the latest version and didn't really use the CD that came with the cable. It is literally the same as what the dealer uses.

There are various youtube videos on how to program the keys with the techstream and its pretty straightforward.
 
Get the cable off Amazon, and download a copy of Techstream and install it on your laptop. If your using a 64 bit operating system, you have to manually update the driver to the 64bit version after installing Techstrem.

You can easily program the key from Techstream.
I would recommend programming the key before you have it cut, because I had to get a few keys before something worked.

I would recommend, instead of purchasing those cheap keys off ebay, get a factory used key from someone off ebay, then purchase the fob case($5-6 bucks) off ebay/amazon and swap the guts, program it and then have it cut.

The factory key is way better than any aftermarket keys.

In case you do want the ebay key, I can say this one worked, the others I ordered did not work. It doesn't work as good though, you have to press the keys slower for instance to unlock all the doors, but it works ok.

You can get yourself a new working key for around $45 bucks total. Cable $25, Key $17, Cutting $1-5 bucks.

[MENTION=166904]Signal[/MENTION]... someone just posted a pdf of programming a key and I think one version was done by opening and closing the door and turning the on and off in a special sequence.

So get the key cut and you may not need anything else.

Techstream will run on Windows 10 /64 if that is what you are worried about. I know that for certain. So yes it will run on old and new, which is actually a good thing.

[MENTION=164407]tb-av[/MENTION] thanks a lot. I think this will work, as my 2014 Trail Premium does not have the smart key just a normal key with lock/unlock on it. This procedure programs both the remote unlock/lock to the car and allows the immobilizer chip to work with the car? If so, then it seems like you don't even need Techstream for it which is great!
 
Thanks for all the help. I could not get the non-TIS procedure to work, with opening and closing doors, I tried it so many times, this is on a 2014 TEP.

I just bought a mini-VCI cable, installed it (on Windows 10), downloaded Techstream and had it working in minutes. I had to add the remote and then the immobilizer. I just used a cheap "G" key off amazon ($10 I think) and had a local locksmith cut it for $2. I am going to do the same with a Valet key since my car didn't come with one of those either.

Which cable did you buy? I was thinking of picking one up as well but there are tons out there.
 
Master Key without fob?

I would like a master key (G transponder) without the fob.

All the "G" keys I found on Amazon (Part TOY44G-PT) say that they're for 2010 to 2013.

But... the same part number on other sites (2 Key Transponder for Toyota G Chip) has 2011 to 2016 - for the same part number.

Anyone know if any TOY44G-PT key will work?

Just wanted to provide an update to this thread as some of the posts are getting old now and the links no longer work. I successfully programmed a new key I bought off ebay: Replacement Remote Head Key 3 Button for Toyota 4-Runner RAV4 HYQ12BDC "G" chip | eBay

This is the cable I used off Amazon. You go to the link that is on the packaging for the cable and download instructions and Techstream from there. Follow the sellers directions exactly and it will work. I was using Windows 10 and had to disable the Windows Security "real-time protection " for it to work. If you don't, the driver for the cable will not install correctly:

bumping an old thread as i only have one key with my "new" 4runner. i see regular keys and keys with a "g" chip on ebay. i think i see a G on the metal part of the key but wanted confirmation before purchasing from the smart folks on here. :D

looks like i'm destined to buy a cable & run techstream after all.

did i just answer my own question?

My 2020 came with an H key

My 2020 SR5 does not have push to start and came with H keys.

Am I just in between model years or something because everything I can find says replacement keys are all compatible with G keys.

Ideally, I'd like to find a good flip key replacement to keep my leg from getting stabbed every time I sit down.

Am I looking in the wrong place or what?
 
I bought 2 keys from Amazon and cut them myself as I have that machine (bought it for 30 bucks).
Took it to Ace hardware and they charged $25.00ea to program a new key.
Key is all you need.

Don't get the whole deal from Ace, they will charge way over $150.
