Programming a Transponder Key and a Security Alarm Fob (Instructions inside)

I thought I'd create a post here because I had difficulty finding instructions for programming a transponder key and fob (purchased from eBay) for my Mom's 2004 4Runner. I managed to locate instructions for programming each so I'm going to post them here. You do not need to go to the dealer to program a transponder key for a 2004 (not sure about other years). This assumes you have at least one master key in your possession.

The following instructions were located in a Toyota service bulletin PDF labeled T-BE4022 - LC120 linked to by nhlpat in a forum post at toyota120.com

Programming a new transponder key:

- The driver door is closed
- Key is not inserted in ignition key cylinder

1) Insert the already registered master key into the ignition key cylinder

- Perform these steps within 35 seconds. The security light is off
2) Insert and remove the key into/from the ignition switch 5 times

3) Open and close the driver door 6 times. Remove the master key.

- Perform the following step within 10 seconds. Security light is on.
4) Insert the key to be registered into the ignition key cylinder and leave it alone.

- Security light is blinking
5) After 60 seconds, the key is registered (The security light will turn off)

The following instructions were located at Free Keyless Remote Fob Entry programming instructions, procedures for all automotive vehicles

Programming a new security fob:

1. Start with the key out of the ignition, drivers door is open all others closed and drivers door is unlocked.

2. Perform these steps within 5 seconds.
A. Insert the key into the ignition(Do NOT Turn) Pull key out.
B. Insert the key into the ignition(Do NOT Turn) Pull key out.

3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Close then open the drivers door.
B. Close then open the drivers door.
C. Insert the key into the ignition(Do NOT Turn) Pull key out.

4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Close then open the drivers door.
B. Close then open the drivers door.
C. Insert the key into ignition and leave it in ignition.
D. Close the drivers door.
E. Turn the ignition to ON (Do NOT Start) then back to OFF.
F. Remove the key from the ignition.

5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should lock then unlock automatically indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1 if the locks do not cycle at this point.

6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Press the lock and unlock buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1.5 seconds.
B. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons,
Press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds. Within 3 seconds, the door
locks should lock and then unlock once indicating successful programming. If
the door locks cycle twice, repeat steps A and B in step 6 as the remote was
not accepted.
C. Repeat steps A and B in step 6 for each new remote.

7. Open drivers door.

Hopefully those steps will help folks program their replacement keys and fobs.

much appreciated, I am in need of another key and another fob. My runner only came with one of each. Hope this will also work on my 2007 SR5. Now, where is a good place to get both the blank chipped key and another fob? I'm not an Ebay person. Amazon? Or any sellers you guys had a great transaction with? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks again.

I wish I could be of more assistance but I always go to eBay for these things. If it makes any difference, the key was purchased from eBay seller: autoniz for $12 and the fob from eBay seller: donypl for $43. Both were in perfect condition and work great.
 
Thx for the youtube links I have a key and fob on the way and its nice to see the vids to go with my instructions.

And I was still under the impression that I had to have the dealer do the key but that just saved me even more $!

All I need to do is get the key cut and then i can start confusing the neighbors lol
 
I had both my new keys cut at my local ACE. And I had not even thought to check the back window as I almost never use that feature. DOH! I will check on that later.
 
I took my registration to the Toyota dealer parts dept and they did it for free with no questions asked. They have the key code and didn't use the old key to cut the new one. It should be a much better cut using the code and the dealer. I then programmed it in the parking lot and made sure all functions worked as they should and drove off. Took 15 min to do everything max.
 
my dealers (60 miles away in either direction) say they will charge either $40 or $45 to program. Doesn't matter if it's one key or fob or how many....my local hardware cut a spare blank without transponder for me to "hide" in case the others get locked in somehow and it works fine on the doors and unlocks the steering column and turns over the ignition but the car won't start. I forgot to try it on the back window myself. Wonder if it will work there
 
I got 2 keys on Ebay from seller mykeyless-1 .$15.49 for the 2 plus free shipping. I thought they had the best deal. I would recommend them.
I did check to see if the fob I programmed works on the rear window and it does. I didn't buy a fob though. I had 2 for my 99 sr5 that doesn't get driven as often. I just used 1 of those since my 2004 had only 1.
 
What suggestions do you guys have if i've lost the master key and only have the vallay key, I read one post saying that the dealership has the code and the cut for the master key. Do i just go up there, Obviously after buying blank online and ask them if they can help me out or is there something i can tell them that will get the service done for a minimal cost. My personal situation was my keys were in my bookbag in a friends car when the car got broken into the bas****s took my whole bag. so all i have is the spare vallay key and a spare fob.
 
Partially worked

So I got the security light to stay on after I pulled the master key out but when I insert the new key the security light flashes a code of 23 and won't stop flashing even after 20 minutes
Anyone know how to fix this problem?
 
Thanks for the great write up. I bought two keys off of amazon for $20 and the dealer cut them for free. So I got two keys cut and programmed for $20 when they wanted over $100 for one. This thread was a life saver.
