Programming new Key?

Is there any way to program a new key that you made? Toyota charged me 50 bucks for the key and then they want another 20 dollars to program the key... what the heck!

I think Toyo is the only place you can get it programmed. Also when you go, make sure to bring ALL your keys. They will program all of them to make sure that they will all work.

When I bought my truck I was missing a key and they had to cut/program one and they asked that I bring all the keys. oh yeah, make sure you test all the keys to make sure they start the truck up.

drats, I was hoping it was like the fords, where you put your master key in the ignition, turn it for 5 seconds, turn it off, then put in the second key,... turn it for 5 seconds, then turn it off.. then put in your new key.... and it should program it. anyone do that before?

Tap Dance

Add Duplicate Key:

1. Simultaneously depress and release brake and accelerator pedals 1 time.
2. Insert existing master key into ignition. Do not turn the key from the OFF (LOCK) position.
3. Within 15 seconds of inserting the key, depress and release the accelerator pedal five times.
4. Within 20 seconds of completing the above step, depress and release the brake pedal six times and
remove the key.
5. Within 10 seconds, insert the new key into the ignition.
6. Within 10 seconds, depress and release the accelerator pedal one time.
7. After 80 seconds the new key is registered and the security light will go off.
8. Remove new key and depress and release the brake pedal 1 time.

Is the above steps used for dulpicating a Toyota key or a Ford key?

Ford, this is what you do

Take both master keys... You need both

Put the first one into the ignition. turn it to run... and count to 5 seconds.. turn it off, put the second master key.. put it in.. turn it to run. .. count 5 seconds... turn it off.... put in the new key... turn it to run... and then turn it off.. it should learn it

don't know because I left the key I cut back in PA.. and I'm in NJ. I'll let you know if the foot tap dance works... the key one... I don't know if I can test it out yet.

According to TSB SS003-02 the keys come preconfigured as Master or Sub and cannot be interchanged. It further states that you need the Toyota Disagnostic Tester kit and 12 Megabyte Diagnostic Tester Program Card to register the new key.

If your procesdure works on a 4th gen, then I would be interested to know since it's not what the TSB says is required.

I tried it on the two keys that I purchased last year when I purchased my 4Runner. It did not work with either key. O,Well maybe someday something will work.

It worked for me

I bought a key off ebay and had it cut by locksmith and followed the above instructions and it worked. I did it 2x as I did not wait for the security light to stop blinking.
