Hello there Just got this gem found it for 500 cash. It is a 99 limited.Has 244000 miles runs and shifts smooth. Battery was shot 4x4 isn't working and has a small hesitation when cold. Some times dies when idealing. Plan on doing a solid tune up and hopefully that takes care of that. I'm looking at this kit 96 02 Toyota 4Runner Tacoma 3 4L V6 NGK Wire Spark Plugs Belt Air Fuel Oil Kit | eBay

i would also like to chang the coil i assume oem is the way to go? If not oem any other brand?

Now for the pictures

I figured the name is going to be project thievery.

Wow. $500. That isn't just thievery, that's a plundering.

Well done!

I think you're going about it the correct way. Take care of the engine first, then figure out the 4X4 issues, and anything after is gravy. How is the rust situation and interior? What are your plans for it? Back to original glory, slightly modded, or an all out build?

I agree, you're going the right direction. Those ebay parts are supposedly OEM, so that is good. Do you know when the timing belt was changed? I have a kit available if you need to do it (it has the accessory belts in the kit though).

If there is a hesitation and stalling at idle, plugs are a good idea. If those don't fix it, you can try cleaning the injectors.

Truck looks clean, otherwise. Nice steal.

Slightly modded and a solid DD. Would like to fit some nice 31s there is no rust and interior is mint for a 99 it was garage kept and serviced at Toyota. The timing belt was done 120000 or so it was written in marker on the air box. I did run a tank of premium and half a can of sea foam just put other half and more gas in.

People would try and ask 7k for that here...except the bumper would be smashed in and paint would be oxidized.

I had hesitation and at statup. Adding a can of fuel cleaner and cleaning the MAF fixed it. If you do the MAF sensor only use MAF cleaner

Good deal! I thought i got a deal on my 04 tacoma TRD 4x4 for $500 but mine had a blown 3.4 engine and yours runs. Congrats!!!

I keep seeing these deal threads and it makes me sick for what I paid for my 2002. Around here they are gold if they have under 200k. Nice find.

Ahh man....

I know how you feel, but just think of it this way at least you have a runner for your money and not some piece of junk.

.....great score man, your on the right path, just start chasing all the little things and don't beat up on her too much before hand ( cookies, burnouts, jumping) and you will be set and installing goodies in no time ( lift, armor, lights). These rigs are indestructible but you still need to be a responsible owner take care of it and it will take care of you!

Welcome to the forum:hello:

Yeah same here, they are crazy expensive in Northern California.

BTW the dying while idling is probably a clogged idle air controller inside your throttle body. Search for it on the forums and you'll see some guides on how to fix that. Try the MAF cleaning first though since that's easy and cheap.

My roommate, dozerfrelich, paid around $200 for his last 3rd gen lol :) there are deals, but they are not mint by anymeans most of the time I don't feel like I over paid for mine at all (9k), but you also get what you pay for lol

$$$$$

:decision:

ahhhhhhh if i could pay $500 and put the extra 10k i paid into a rig....

well we could say i'd be in heaven..

even if you parted it out.. i mean thats a steal..

Was doing a little midnight tinkering. Cleaned the maf was going to do the iac but have to get a gasket. Decided to pull a plug and check it out wow....lol I have learned that the runners are picky about plugs and I found this burnt up smelling like gas and not a duel. It's a champion smh... .

Yeah, you need dual ground plugs (Denso or NGK)

Sounds like you got a great deal! I scored on mine also. 2 owner all maintenance done at dealer. Guy I got it from had a gambling problem and I stole it from him. Not perfect shape but great driver and solid. I almost dont want to sell it. Love this old 4runner!

I think I found your idle problem. lol

I've noticed a database issue with these trucks with dual and single electrodes. Pep Boys and Amazon have both given me wrong plugs before and I have to get the right ones.

Hopefull, this fixes your issues, it will be an easy fix.

If you wait and keep looking for one that looks like a regular DD that has some thing wrong with it normally its something small that is easy to fix. Both of my runners combined cost me less then 1k
