projector head lamps

I'm gathering my parts to do this but no one really answered the question about a 9006 bulb into the projector.

Is it necessary to switch to a H11 bulb.

Is it just a fitment issue of a 9006 into the new housing or is there something else.

Yes it's necessary to put an H11 bulb into the '06+ projector. If you're looking to stick with regular halogen bulbs an upgrade to that would be to squeeze in an H9, but that's it. The 9006 won't work in any way.

To the best of anyone's knowledge, has anyone ever come up with a means in which to alleviate the gap the 06+ lights leave on 03-05 4Runners?

I've been considering retrofitting my rig with these lights in order to drop in some HIDs down the road, but I guess I haven't been able to find any info on a possible "fix", if you will. And the aftermarket options out there are a little on the "blingy" side for my tastes and I have heard reports of suspect quality.

That said, I'd be interested to see what people have done. It doesn't appear to be a massive gap by any measure, but I find that it does kinda catch my eye, and knowing it was there would bother me.

If not, that's cool. Just curious.

Thanks.

The gap is barely noticible and I have it for ~2 years. Now it looks that it was there always, nobody actually mentioned to me that there is a gap. SO I'd just upgrade to 2006 light in your case and if you want HID - XenonDepot is the way to go.

Thanks Alex, good to hear from somebody that has done the swap.

I am pretty sure you're right, people likely wouldn't notice it at all, but I would know it was there and there are two major things that make our situations different:

1 - Your truck is a friggin' beast, the last thing that would catch my eyes is your head lights, not with all the other good stuff you've got on board! I love what you've done with your 4Runner.

2 - I've got a white 4Runner, and I worry any gap is going to stand our far, far more than it would on your black truck.

Do we know of anyone that's done this with a white 4runner?

Btw, thanks for the input, that does make me feel better about it.

There was someone quite awhile ago that did purchase those pieces for underneath the headlamps. I think I remember him saying you could order them in the color you need.
Sorry, I don't remember which member it was. I also think I remember him saying that they don't connect properly at the edge that is up against the grill because the grill is different on the 03-05 models.

Exactly. I have original '06 trim pieces under the '06 headlights and they do have a small triangular gap as '06 grille is different, but nobody sees this gap and I don't care about it any more.

AlexJet, Would you mind posting a picture of the gap? It is hard to see in the picture i have seen of your AWESOME t4r

That's a nice pic, Alex.

I'd like to keep my DRLs and signals down below so as not to make those lamps pointless - or at least have them in both areas. Is this doable pretty easily? I guess I didn't see an answer to the guy that asked this earlier in the thread.

Thanks guys for putting up with my questions - I appreciate it - I did some searches but it didn't yield me an answer.

Alright, did this mod this weekend. All in all, I think they look SWEET, and the HID kit is pretty nice, although I'm not entirely sure I'd do this mod again if I did it all over. The gap doesn't look bad and is barely noticeable, so for me that is a non issue. I think part of the loss of my enjoyment of this mod is my worry that I'm going to be blinding people. I actually had my lights aimed super low and almost didn't see an exit on a not very well lit freeway this past weekend. Another thing that bugs me is the uneven cut off. the light doesn't look uniform, although I think thats an issue with the squirrel finder which is fixable, but I'm afraid of losing illumination of street signs.

As far as the blinker, and parking light, the harness that is mentioned is not compatible with the 04 model. And, let me say, my knowledge of vehicles has improved ASTRONOMICALLY since joining this forum, and I've done some REALLY cool stuff to my truck I've never dreamed I'd be able to do. But I still have a lot to learn...which brings me to the above problem. I was driving home today, and it just kind of hit me. There are 3 wires for 2 different lights. 2 have to be power, and the one they both share has got to be the ground. Therefore, if I want them to work, I should splice the greenwire to the parking light power wire, the red wire to the turn signal power wire, and the white black (single) wire to the ground wire on the parking light (proximity).

What do you think guys? Is it really that simple?

After I installed OEM '06 lights the light patter is better then was on '05. HIDs I used are XenonDepot and they never blind anyone in past 2 years. Something wrong with either lights or HIDs. Do you have OEM lights and what HID kit are you using?
As of parking lights, I made my own ground and solded power wires. Turn signals are still in the bumper, but if needed its the same way.

Yeah, I have OEM Toyota lights. I also have a Xenon Depot kit. I'm going to analyze the beam pattern of each individual light this weekend. Thanks again AlexJet, you've been a huge help.

So Alexjet, do the screw holes on the 2006 light assembly fit with ones for the 2005, or did you have to make some mods to get them to fit? I'm about ready to do this mod but I'm not sure I want to drill holes in my car.

No holes need to be drilled. Everything will line up, HOWEVER, when you are removing your headlight there will be 3 or 4 screws on the top that need to be taken off. There will also be one inside the fender that is a PITA to take out, and you need a 10mm socket to do so. I found the best way to do it, is to lay under the car, and that gives pretty good access. I mention that one because you have to be a freakin Houdini to get that bolt in again. But it really isn't necessary to the lights stability.

What WON'T fit is the plastic clips that secure the garnish to headlights. I kind of haphazardly had mine under the light with no clips and it was fine, but I purchased them from the dealer a few weeks later, and the fit is much better and I don't have to worry about losing a 60 dollar part on the freeway. I can't remember exactly, but you'll probably pay around 10 bucks for 2 sets of the necessary clips.

I really recommend adding the wiring harness that was mentioned here from the 93ish Tercel. Otherwise you'll have a really ghetto setup where you have the leads going into the female leads and a makeshift socket made of electrical tape, if you want to the parking lights to work. I'm thinking about fabricating another wire that will use the 06 blinker instead of the bumper blinker. But we'll see.

Simple,

Thanks for the reply. It's good to know that the headlight assembly fits with no mods. Can I ask where you bought your assembly from? I'm thinking about getting some after market ones I saw on 1Aauto.com. They are $230 for the set.

I'm a little confused with all this wiring harness talk. So if I want turn signals, and DRL's, (does DRL stand for Daytime running lights?) I will need the extra harness? What if I don't care about that since the lower lights will have turn signals do I still need the harness? If I bye the HID kit do I even need to bye another harness or will they hook up directly to the factory harness?

I got mine off of Ebay. It took awhile because I wanted OEM, and the sport model lights, which are smoked. The beam pattern might not be as good on the aftermarkets, particularly if you're doing an HID kit. Are you planning on upgrading to HID?

As far as the wiring harnesses, the one listed with the part number that is shown above, is not really a necessity, but a really good idea. You should probably seal those holes if you plan not to get it, so moisture doesn't get in. You will lose the parking lights, which are the lights that are on when you click the stalk once, not twice which turns on the headlights. I have no idea about the DRL, as I don't have those. Those harnesses are a little expensive, I want to say about 20-30 a piece on partznet.

The additional harness that mario made above is my current setup. What I did was go to a junk yard and find a 90's tercel and looked at their turn signals. Some of them have a three wire connector that will fit the previously mentioned harness that fits the parking light and turn signal for 06 headlights. I then purchased the repair splices listed on Mario's thread, and made a secondary harness, that connects the 06 headlight harness pictured above on my post, to my original 04 harness that is in the truck. So essentially, for a clean set up you will buy 1 harness listed with the parts needed here, and make another harness using the old tercel part and the splices/connector. This will result in the your bumper signals still being your turn signal. The 'turn signal' socket and the parking light socket will essentially both turn into parking lights. So when you click once, both the lights will turn on, and if you click twice, the headlights too. If you turn on your turn signal, both those lights will remain on/off, and only your bumper will flash.

If you decide to go that route, once you cut out the tercel harness you should have the pig tail, which is the plastic connector and three cut wires. 2 should be green and one will be white. The green will be positive, and the white ground. So I chose to strip the end of the green exposing the wire, and twist the 2 together. Then I connected the repair splices using a butt connector, just crimping them together. Before you plug in the repair splices into the connector you bought, look at your stock harness in the car, and how the connector will be plugged in, so you can make sure you put the pos and ground wires from your newly made harness into the correct spot on the plastic connector so you're not mixing the power and the ground cause your lights won't work. Make sense?

If you are NOT going HID, you will need to make and additional harness to convert your 9006 OEM harness to the H11 bulbs for the new headlight housing. This was incredibly simple too, I just went on ebay, and I THINK the user was 'global north' or something, but searched for the appropriate male and female 9006/h11 connectors, which already came in the pigtail form with wires and all. Again, I just stripped the ends, and connected both ends with a butt connector and crimped it. I did this anyway incase one of HID goes out, or they both go out and I can't afford new bulbs, or have to wait for them to come in the mail, I can just go to autozone and pick up some cheap lights and plug them in.

Lot of verbage in there, thats probably not as clearly articulated as in my head.

And just to make clear, while no mods need to be made to your vehicle, you will need that garnish, which is under the headlight as your current one won't fit with the new headlight.

Hello All,

Thank you for all this information as it is very helpful to what I'm doing.

I bought 2 Headlight housings off of ebay (96+ projectors)
And bought an H11 HID Kit, both on their way to me.

I see that I will need the wiring harness for the Turn Signals. (Part 81125-35440) Which I will order today from Toyota.

I found this website that Significantly helped with the diagram that i'm looking for (or any part for that matter). http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_U_2006_TOYOTA_4RUNNER_GRN210L-GKAZKA_8101.2.html

My questions is am I going to need to adapt the Factory 9006 bulbs to the new H11 Hid kit? Or is it just plug and play?
Also, Do I have to put the turn signals in the headlights? Or can I just still use the factory ones in the bottom of the bumper?

Again, thanks for all your help.

You need to have them send you the original 9006 sockets for the HID kit but just send you the H11 lights, because the lights are what is interchangable not the car connection. Hopefully you get this before they ship you the lights most of the time they change it for free but after they ship they will charge you. Check out my thread on how to set up the other lights for a clean install and look.
