Proper 4x4 Engagement and Disengagement Procedure? - 2001 4runner

The manual for the 2001 4runner on this thread does not detail the proper operation of the 4x4 engagement and disengagement.

It all depends on which set up you have, I had this same question before i took my runner out offroading for the first time. Luckily mine has the the push button to engage the 4wd on the shifter to change from 4hi to 4low but thats it. I admit it tok me a little while to decipher where in the manual it actually said how to use my particular set up, but i eventually found it. More info would be needed to help you. A picture or more details of your set up would be helpful, like if you are auto or manual trans wether you have a shifter type or push button type.

No manuals in 2001. Not sure about shifter but I don't think they had those either. I drive a stick, so I can't help further.

If it were me... I would simply engage any 4x4 mode (hi/low) from a stop if I wasn't sure how to engage it.

I believe my wife's 2000 manual trans 4x4 (aka Highlander edition) states that 4hi can be engaged while moving but I don't recall the max speed.

4lo will be engaged from a stop.
