Properly securing spare wheels?

I'm considering a trip to Alaska next year and would like to take some spare wheels. How many can I safely tie on to a factory 2016 4Runner Trail roof rack and how would I safely secure them?

Also, can an extra OEM rim with tire be put in the spare tire well?

If you plan to carry spare tires on the roof, I would suggest you get a roof rack basket. It will keep the tires from damaging the roof, and give you better support and points to tie them down.

As for the 2nd part of your question, not sure what you mean by the "spare tire well". As far as I know, the only factory spare storage is under the rear end of the vehicle. If that is what you mean, I don't think you can fit a 2nd spare under there. Even if you manage to hang two tires together, I think it would be too low and cause ground clearance issues.

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking of discarding the steel spare and replacing with an alloy spare with a winter/offroad tire of the same size.

My steel spare is a t city recycle yard. I bought 5 wheels. Why have full size spare if you can only drive on it limited distance?

Wow, I did not realize that the 5th gen is now coming with a steel spare instead of the matching alloy wheel, like my 4th gen did. The bean counters strike again.

I throw my spare in my roof top yakima basket and then just use a large ratchet strap to secure it. Its a pain in the ass to get up and down, but it doesnt block my view like a rear tire carrier. Nor does it have the rear tongue weight.
