Pros and Cons to Ipad in Dash

I'm not really thinking about doing this or anything. I just stumbled across a video on youtube and was thinking to my self "Is an ipad in your dash really that useful?"

Wouldn't you have to have have an ipad with cellular data or a hotspot on your phone to be able to use the majority of the apps?

So what would some of the pros and cons be?

I use it a ton, especially for travel. iPad mini 3 with Cellular, I use t for navigation, music and sometimes video for passengers..

Bought a mount that hooks into the CD player. (What's a CD anyway?!) and have a cable for and charger cable ran for it.

Cons, blocks driver or passenger vent a little, can be distracting (duh). Those are the only two cons I can think of, well worth the purchase, did it replace my radio no, it sits right in front of it. I'll post a picture tomorrow mid to late after noon of what it looks like.

I got an alpine head unit with Apple play and it's basically a screen to display iPhone. Works well.

I have an iPad mounted in the dash. It is awesome and was worth every penny. I use it for navigation, movies (for the passenger) and music of coarse. I have cellular on it so it makes it really useful, and it's only $10 a month. We use the Internet on it a lot too, when we need to look up a place to eat or a phone number, we can do it all on the iPad. Plus I can store my entire iTunes library on it plus quite a few movies (64gb). It makes the screen much easier to see compared to a regular double din stereo also

not sure if you're looking for in dash setups specifically , but you can also mount an iPad off to the side , if you wanted to keep your existing stereo...here's what I run , all RAM mounts , very stable despite being heavy ...

That looks friggin' amazing. Excellent work, looks factory! I've been looking into getting a double DIN setup installed for the benefits of Apple play and what-not, but wasn't quite sold on the appearance of most installs. This looks absolutely perfect and exactly what I would like to do.

Did you remove that center cubby space and shift the HVAC controls and computer display down a bit to accommodate the iPad?

apple car play LOL

you know it still uses apple maps

im in 12v car stereo, and i dont see the benefit of carplay. i hope you dont think that you can watch videos now with it, or use google maps(its apple), or use waze, or anything else besides what apple says you can use. android auto on the other hand lets you use amazon music, spotify and a few others.

apple car fail play, IMHO

Thanks! Although I didn't do the work myself, I did help with the planning of it. The cubby at the bottom was trimmed and plastic welded in place ( never used it anyway) and we did have to move the hvac and display down a bit. Also plastic welded. Definitely came out better than I was expecting. Most have a bump out of the top to accommodate the larger size and I felt like that didn't look as factory.

Do you ever go over your data limit?
 
I don't, but I share 16gb between my wife and I. If you mainly use it for navigation and music it really doesn't use that much data

Would you mind posting a few more pics so I can get a better idea of how I might go about doing the same? So the cubby you plastic welded shut? Based on your experience with it do you think it would be hard to trim down but still be functional? (not that it was too functional in the first place...)

What obstacles did you run into with moving the HVAC controls and display down? I'm also curious how the iPad sits in the dash--is it a snug fit or does it rattle? If you wouldn't mind telling me a bit more about how you went about things I'd appreciate it!

I wouldn't say this is true, I've had mine for a while now and it's not outdated. And if it ever is, it is removable so I could just slide a new one in. It connects to my wifi at home from the vehicle and gets all of its updates, and even downloads new songs that I buy on iTunes automatically

I carry an old iPad 1 with celluler & wi-fi for navigation on and off-road as well as music. Good use for an obsolete model. I use bungee cords when I want to use it and was thinking of making one that mounts like yours. Looks like I don't have to, who makes yours?
