Prospective 4Runner - price too good to be true?

I wouldn't think so, I could've got a 15 Trail premium for $37k and a regular Trail for around $33k, so I don't think a 4 year old one for $30k is all that great.
 
It does seem to be a good price for a truck with low miles and Nav. At the same time, that's not all that much less than a brand new trail and it's 3 model years old (pretty much 4).

That should be pretty close to the going list price... there's another 2012 within 150 miles listed with 20k more for less money yet. Used 2012 Toyota 4Runner Trail - in 13904 Area - on Cars.com

As another already mentioned... new isn't a whole lot more. I'm someone that said they would never buy new years ago. However, with the used car market being as ridiculously high as it's been over the last several years, new cars can be had pretty close to what those minty 1-3 year old vehicles we look for bring. So don't simply pass on new thinking used will always be a better deal... especially with a vehicle like a 4Runner that retains is value so well. Best wishes!
 
The reason the used car market is rediculously high is because the new car market is way high and people are priced out of the market for new.

I bought a 4 runner within the last few weeks. Ended up buying new because I couldn't find any 2013 or 2014's for sale, and when I did the asking prices were the same as new.

However there were 2012's everywhere because apparently everyone in my area leases their cars for 3 years. If I had went for a 2012, I would have really played hardball with the dealer because they were just stacked up on every lot I went to.
 
That's not too far off from what I paid for my 2013 Trail a few weeks back. Only about $1500 less or so and it has 36k miles on it.

So let me get this right, when you see a used vehicle around 30k slightly less with super low miles on it, somehow people thing buying new is the practical descision?

I just went through this process, and I can tell you after a VERY extensive search, there is NO 4runner out there (5th gen that is) thats worth having with decent miles beyond 2010 for anywhere under 27k. So lets say we compare 28,500 which I believe is about the baseline for a gently used 5th gen with low(ish) miles before even considering trim levels etc.

Can you guys with this "Buy new cuz it's like barely more" idea, please tell me how buying a $36,729 BASE msrp SR5 premium with zero rebates available before sales tax (Not even taking into account Trails, limiteds and TRD's)..... is a better or even close to equal option of buying a 28,500 vehicle or even 29,999 SR5 with say leather, moonroof, 3rd seat, running boards, sub 65k miles etc?

There is at the VERY LEAST a 7,400 difference between the 2 trucks without even taking into account some of the features the used one may have over the new at that price. Even at 0% financing over 60 months (Which is probably not even obtainable) thats over a $123 more a month on an already substantial car payment. The math tells the story.

I'm not sure I can get with this school of thought? :der:

I'm guessing you paid MSRP. Like I mentioned, you can get a base Trail for around $33-34k if you negotiate. To me it's totally worth paying $3-4k more for brand new one then one you don't know the history of. But thats just me and people have different budgets and so on.
 
That price seems high to me. If you're willing to pay that much why not just buy new. It will be the difference of a few thousand dollars...

It would make more sense to buy a used 2010-2011 for 22k or a new 2016 for 35k... Not in the middle. Buying used at 29k buys you all the problems of a used and possibly abused truck while practically paying the price of a new truck with none of the "new" benefits...

I guess if you pay ASKING price for vehicles you will never understand it. I paid $34k OTD for my 2015, well worth a couple grand more.

This is exactly where I was at. I wouldn't own a 5th without KDSS - I don't like how they handle, so for me it was either a '10 trail with 100k miles for $20k or a new '15 trail for $37 (I bought a trail premium). The $30k used version just out of warranty isn't a good deal IMO.

This is especially true when you consider the cost of ownership over say 3 years. The $30k used car 3 years later is now the $20k 6yr old, and the $37k new is now a $30k used. The ownership cost is often less for the new one over 3-5 years, plus you get free maintenance, warranty, no red instruments, etc.

It's a very unusual situation for cars like the 4runner or Tacoma that this is the case. I always buy lease return Lexus as our other car. For example our '10 RX350 was $27k 3 years old with a CPO warranty to 100k, and 40k miles. New is around $50k. That's a very easy call for me to make. Especially since my philosophy is if you can't pay cash you can't afford it. Writing a check for $27k is a lot easier than $50k. If a 3yr old used RX350 was going for $45k, i'd buy new.

I would consider these options. They are roughly 10k less than a new truck with lots of low maintenance life left in them.

The $29,999 for the OP's truck does not include title fees, plate, and sales tax... It would be $33,000 otd... That is too close to new price to be worth the downgrade.

I understand he would probably not pay the asking price but still that is just too much money.

Here's the numbers:

(OP's first option)- $30,000 loan @ 3.00% for 60 months= $32,343.60 total payments
$30,000 loan @ 4.00% for 60 months= $33,150.00 total payments. I give 2 rates, because that's the range that I see for private party used purchases currently, though, your rate may vary.

Buying new- $35,000 loan @ 0% for 60 months (I don't know if Toyota has it either, but you brought it up)= $35,000 in total payments. Plus, a full factory warranty and higher value down the road due to 3 MY's newer.

The new vs. used debate IS one worth having, because the difference really ISN'T that much. (<$2,000 over 5 years could EASILY be offset by a 3 model year difference)

I just bought a 2011 used trail w/kdss w/65k on the clock for $27K. I am not worried about a factory warranty. These vehicles rarely have problems. I looked at a new Trail but did not want to spend $38k before taxes for a trail w/kdss. I feel the used trail I have which is in near perfect condition will last just as long if taken care of.
 
If it has KDSS it seems like a decent deal. But, prices where I live are higher than a lot of the country so take it for whats its worth.
