Actually, most tint laws are designed to protect those who "protect" you.
My advice, and no I'm not that guy, who stopped that other guy...is if you get pulled over and you happen to have tint on your windows, ROLL THEM DOWN! Then put your interior lights on if it is dark out. (another law in some states) Po-Po wants to be able to see inside said vehicle when he/she approaches it. They want to see your hands too. Remember drivers-ed classes, "ten and two"? Good place to put your little beaters until the Man asks you for your, reg,insurance, and license.

Or you can move to FL.

If you can make the officer feel safe during the traffic stop, it'll just be easier for the both of you.

My recommendation would be signal, acknowledging the fact you're being pulled over. On the freeway, exit to a safe and well lit area. Shut off the engine, pull the key out and toss it on the dash, so the officer knows you're not going to run. Turn on your dome/map light, so s/he can see you and the interior of your car. The safer they feel during the stop, the easier it'll be. In better economic times, they might let you off with a warning, but right now, times are tough and the localities need all the revenue they can get.

I got caught using the carpool lane & for having my front windows tinted...shit, they are only 35%.

Anyways...my citation came in the mail & there was an option to contest it, remove the tint and pay a lower fine or just pay more & leave it on (dismissed & no further action necessary)

Window tint laws are designed for driver safety, not officer safety, varies from state to state, and is enforced differently from state to state. In fact, the federal government states that any after market tint that takes visibility below 70% if illegal, but allows the states to establish their own standards. Some of the points made on here regarding how to handle being pulled over are good ones. A cop does in fact like to be able to see who and what is in the vehicle. If your tint is below 35%, it is hard to see from the outside in, so as was said, safely pull over, roll down your window, turn off the ignition, and keep both hands on the steering wheel. If you are in a open carry or concealed carry state and have a carry permit, tell the officer that up front as well. If it is at night, turn your interior dome light on. The more you make things safer for the officer, the easier he/she will be on you. All of the above advice is given with the presumption that you are doing nothing illegal beyond speeding or some other traffic infraction.

CO actually has some of the most lenient laws on tint that I'm aware of. As long as your two front windows aren't tinted, you can tint the rest of the car as dark as you want.

I assume the extremely dark tint on my rear windows is factory tint since I don't think I've ever seen a 3rd gen 4runner without it.

For that matter, my wife's Suzuki GV has pretty dark tint on the rear windows too, from the factory.

Luckily the state tropper happened to be a member of t4r! What are the chances? So he recognized me and let me off with a warning. I was completely shocked to hear the name sn0wrunner come out of the officer's mouth. lol!

Just wanted to say thanks for letting me off with the warning, but i've been driving around with this tint for a couple years now and I'm not going to be removing it. Technically you never said i had to remove it. You were just warning me that it is illegal. :biggrin2:

You should put a t4r.org sticker on your car, and he probably pulled you over because he liked ur runner and tints was a good excuse.

Correct, I do have the fronts tinted. But he was behind me the whole time. There is no way he could see that the fronts were tinted when he was behind me. He recognized my vehicle and used the tint as an excuse to say hello. We had a nice talk. He has some smoked LED tails for sale if anyone is interested.

To answer your question, NO it's not "boneheaded" at all to respond like this. He told me to post something up on the boards. And even if he does read this he will know it's all in good fun and im messing around with him. In his signiture on this board it says that he has "15% tint all the way around" which is exactly what i have. So it'd be a little hipocritical to be busting me for that. Him and I have talked on here and it was simply a weird coincidence that he would see me on the highway. So he used the only excuse he had to pull me over in order to say hello. In the suburbs of colorado they arent real stingy about stuff like tint. If I was in some "Hood" place i could see it being an issue. Although 00spork can agree I'm pretty gangsta :uzi: hahaha

In CA, 70% (pretty much, no tint) on the front side windows, any percentage on the rear windows, 4" banner only for the windshield.

Maybe. I don't know. My neighbor had dark tint on his car and got pulled over in SoCal for it. He told the officer, the weather is hot around here. The officer replied, if you were from Nevada, I'll cut you some slack and let it go.

IMO, it's probably a your mileage may vary. Tint, I believe is a secondary offense in CA, so they can't stop you for tint alone.

I can answer your question, in texas, ive realized a trend. in the middle parts of the months, usually more local cops try to pull you over for speeding or big things, but at the beginning and ends of the months, the texas highway patrol or county sheriffs tend to pull you over for many little things, like one late night at the end of the month i was pulled over for my blue LED license plate lights by a rookie sheriff! at the car wash i work at, we get a lot of law enforcement, and usually the state troopers really try their best to primarily give warnings over a ticket, unless you were going double the speed limit. other than that, most of the state troopers are relaxed, but the locals and county sheriffs will ride your ass most of the beginning and end of the months. rarely during the middle

Wow Sn0wrunner, when I first read the title of your post I thought your luck couldn't get any worse!

Like you had mentioned, I think it was just an excuse to pull you over and say hello. That's an awesome story, and goes to show it's a small world. I remember seeing you driving the opposite direction of me a couple of months ago. Your 4R definitely stands out!

FWIW, my buddy who is a Lakewood police officer has completely blacked out tint (Limo I believe, 5%) on his Durango. My buddy who is a Brighton police officer also has "illegal" tint on his Tundra, but it is not quite as dark.

I have a great deal of respect for CSP, and all law enforcement for that matter. There are definitely more cool cops than A-holes. I actually encourage everyone I know to go on a ride-along with their local LE agency to see what kind of BS they deal with on a day-to-day basis. They can pull you over in CA regardless of which state you are from. Whether or not the cop will do so, is up to them.

That is so true. Last time i was in CA, (long story short) i got pulled over for tinted front windows but didn't get a ticket b/c my vehicle is registered in Colorado.
