Pulling the trigger on a TE.

Hey all.
New here, and my first post. I've been researching my next purchase here, and I am hoping that some of you might be able to help with some perspective. I'm currently driving an '05 Xterra S, and looking to upgrade. I've test driven both the SR5 and the TE, and the TE definately has the cool factor overall. I'm currently being offered a 2012 leftover with 49 miles for 35,700 before tax and title. It has the nav, but no KDSS. From my research, it seems that this is under invoice and a good deal for the TE, but from what I've read, KDSS is really great and I'm bummed that there are no dealers around here that have a trail with KDSS for me to test out. Does this sound like a good deal?

I left a 07 Xterra Offroad to my 2012 Trail with KDSS. I would HIGHLY recommend you drive one with the KDSS option. My new Trail would drive circles around my X if I still had it. Having put 20k on the T4R odometer, it is such a pleasure to drive on road compared to the X. Offroad it's a wash for the terrain I go on. More bells and whistles and just as capable.

I agree drive a KDSS one and then if you don't see or feel any real difference get the left over. I don't have KDSS and I love my trail....errrrr.....SR5.

Xterra replacement

Totaled my 1 owner 10' Xterra Off Road 6 speed when a guy Uturned in front of me from the right lane of a 4 lane road as I'm going 50mph. Xterra held up and kept me safe but I just took delivery on a black 13' TE with KDSS, Nav, remote start and all weather mats.

I would have been happy wearing out the Xterra but the 4Runner is so much more vehicle in every way and worth the price difference.

I would love to test out a KDSS equipped TE, but there isn't one anywhere near where I live. I think the closest one is over 300 miles away. Does the X-REAS system in the limited simulate what the KDSS would feel like in any way? I could definitely find a limited to test out. Without the KDSS, is the price good for the TE I'm looking at?
 
I'd order one with KDSS. They have a beefier sway bar with disconnects, so they handle much better on road and off.

I'm not sure if that's a good price or not, but there has been other recent threads concerning pricing that you could go back and check out.
 
You don't define your use, so opinions really are hard to offer.

You also don't state the msrp, so the price offer is difficult to opine on.

For a killer deal, and light off-roading, I'd jump right on that - the 4R is a great vehicle.

EDIT: FYI there's a '12 TE, and an '11 TE, both w/ KDSS in the main forum classifieds.

That seems a little high to me being a 2012 and 13's have been out for over 6 months. You might want to look at KBB or NADA values for a 2012 with low miles on it and add $1k or so. As with all new vehicles, you take it when you drive it off the lot but I think you would be taking it even more being that is a 2012. I almost pulled the trigger on a 2013 trail in November of last year. MSRP was $40.9k. It had KDSS,sliding rear cargo deck,kdss, touch screen nav with entune. I was quoted $38.6k drive out for the vehicle. I wish I could have purchased it looking back but wife wanted leather, heated seats and some other comforts so went with LE.

Hope this info helps in the negotiations. I would think your resale would be better down the road if you had the KDSS on there but there are probably aftermarket options you can MOD in that will make a KDSS system. I haven't searched that on here but it's probably out there somewhere. Good luck on your purchase.
 
Yeah, the MSRP on the '12 was 38,600. I was just quoted for a TE with KDSS that was allocated to another dealer a ways away for the same MSRP! but it's unavailable. I might have to settle on another color, but it seems like there may be some other options. They are giving me 5,000 for the xterra which brings that drive out price lots more appealing. I would drive off the lot paying 33,5 for it. I only do light offroading, but wanted the KDSS for the on road stability as well.
 
I went from an '05 Xterra Off Road to my 2012 TE. You will not be disappointed with your Trail, it is 10 times the quality of the Xterra, my Xterra had major mechanical/transmission problems before 75k miles. The Trail is better off road too, crawl control is the real deal, not just a gimmick. That looks like a decent price, if you can be patient I would recommend holding out for the KDSS, it really improves on-road performance. It is true that there are not a lot of TEs out there, but these dealers can usually get their hands on them if they know you are serious.

Good luck, you are about to get the best ride out there for on and off road performance, the TE is a real sleeper, an all around great ride.
 
Hold off for KDSS, well worth the money. The system assists in counter leveling your vehicle on turns, inclines, in other words lessens the leaning especially on those rural roads. My back seat drivers do not complain about those twisted turns, leaning, or get car sick.

I have had my TE since Jan.08.2011. If i had to replace it, it would be another TE with the same options... there is no remorse.

I think KDSS is worth every penny. If you can't find a 4Runner with KDSS to test drive in your area, you could test drive the Lexus GX460. That's what I did.

The GX460 is based on the same platform and has KDSS as standard equipment. The GX has more power and more luxury features, but it will give you a very good idea of how KDSS handles. It won't ride exactly the same as the 4Runner, but you will be able to experience the on-road benefits provided by KDSS. Body roll in turns will be minimal.

I had bilsteins on my 2007 XTerra and it rode pretty darn good. Over the years, sagging rear leaf springs became noticeable. The Xterra definitely would blow the doors off my 2011 4Runner at a stoplight. The thing was like a racecar. I kept the XTerra for a year after buying the 4Runner... so I had them both at the same time. Hard to explain, the XTerra was more fun to drive in my opinion (fun fun engine & no excessive transmission downshifting), but I like the refinement of the 4Runner.

As I much as I loathe Nissan after they would not fix the defective trannie in my '05 Xterra, I will give you this - that Nissan V6 had pep. The '05 was actually faster 0-60 than the Porsche Cayenne the same year!
