Pumping gas with tanker present

I ran into the gas station quick and didn't see the tanker. My girlfriend started pumping, with the damn tanker adding fuel to the system. I ran out and shut it off as soon as I saw it. It was only about 3.5 gallons.

Probably nothing big to worry about, but I've heard sediment can get stirred up and end up in the gas tank. Just wondering what I should do at this point to reduce the possibility of any associated problems. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Uh....every dispenser has a spin on canister filter - just like a big oil filter- that filters out contaminants before it goes out the nozzle.

This is the answer, there is more to worry about than a tanker adding fuel.

water in the fuel when the tank is low can be an issue but only if there is a problem with the tank or installation

if your 4runner didn't start bucking and running terrible shortly after filling up you have nothing to worry about

Speaking of fuel...... What grade do you guys get for your 5th gen? I have been filling up with 92 but I am wondering if I am throwing money away buying the higher grade....?

87 octane is just fine.

I have often wondered about that, I'd figure it'd be an easy enough problem to counter with an inline filter.

You should be worried because all the sediment from the distributor goes into the tanker, and then settles in the tank truck and is circulating when he's filling the station's tanks. Bad bad bad... in a perfect world there'd be a filter in the pump, and one in your car.

prior to alcohol fuels like we have now , the fuel tanks were made of steel. when the tanker filled the station tanks the rust would circulate and get into your fuel tank.. I had this happen to me. my 1996 sedan did not cold start good . was 3yrs old no steel tank no steel fuel lines. replaced fuel filter engine start perfect.. still have vehicle today . cut open the filter since the filter was the fix. it was loaded with rust.
5K miles later replaced filter again filter looked good but had more particles than it should have had.

this is a old issue that is true going back now , over a decade plus in the past. it is not a B/S story.

I would not worry about it now , since if the glass service station tanks had any water it would still be at the bottom of the station tank as the fuel floats on the water. also the tanks now have a closed and filtered system much better than the old days when bad gas was more of a problem due to no regulations .

many new vehicles have no replaceable fuel filters its part of the fuel pump assy... due to the improved regulations on fuel suppliers fuel quality not a required maintenance item..

if you store the vehicle for a year or more , best drain out all the fuel ...

There are also sensors in and around the tanks to detect for water.

You guys should worry more about the idiots filling their fuel cans in the back of their truck beds, filling with the nozzles upside down while in their car, or people driving away with the nozzle still inserted. We have people test at least 2 of our break-away hoses/month at my work...

4Runner is only sold in NA. I have traveled six continents. Very few places in the world that have gas stations that use unfiltered pumps. Even gas buddy hand pumps have filters. This is not 1960.
