I would actually say the opposite, people paying top dollar for an inferior product for their use. Most people buy these things for the rugged image and suffer through the inefficient power plant, poor handling and old tech. There are so many better options out there in the modern SUV space.
 
agree to disagree, for my needs anyway.

i didnt by my vehicle for the off-roadyness initially...i bought it for snow driving, for dependability, and its long-lasting nature. i have owned a jeep, a Land Rover Disco, along with a long lasting pickup. i only paid 28k for my 2014 in 2014, so i beat the high prices, in the summertime i ride a 48mph sport-touring motorcycle to keep me away from the gas station pretty much, and if i want handling, i get on my sportbike and enjoy what that gives me, usually at a track-day. I dont drive a 4door SUV for the handling.

so i have options...and when it comes to my 4Runner, its the option i have when the cold comes and the snow starts to fall. Plus, ive learned how much fun off-roading is as a bonus.

What's funny are the people who buy a 4Runner expecting it to handle like sports car at 70 mph in curves. Complete mismatch of design and buyer expectations. They should buy a Porsche Macan and watch from the sidelines at Moab.

When I buy a car or truck, I'm buying a tool and I want reliability. I could give a rat's ass about entertainment center or the # of USB ports. I'm driving, not texting or playing on social media. Lack of parking sensors or low quality screen of rear back-up camera? I don't use them and frankly they have created more problems than they are worth with my wife using them to back out of a narrow garage. Good old fashioned driving ability trumps this tech crap every time, which speaks volumes about the lack of driving skills of the younger, tech reliant generation.

BTW unable to suffer through the guy's entire video. I think he suffers from Tourette's syndrome.

Doug brings up many good points and I basically agree with everything he says. I love the blend of simplicity and basic creature comforts most of us now expect.

For $40k-$45K, a well optioned 4Runner ORP is a good deal for the money. For less than $40K, it's a great deal. Paying anymore than $45K for ANY 4Runner, including a Pro, is pure robbery. Why on God's earth people are paying $45-60K for these things is pure bonkers. Unless you plan to off road the living hell out of the thing, the 4Runner is outclassed from every angle. It's saving grace is (more like was) it's cheap price compared to the competition. Now people are blindly paying $50K+ for ORPs. Jesus.

I will also add that the TRD Pro exhaust is complete and utter dog crap when you have to live with it on a highway trip. You become very aware of how much 5th-4th, 4th-5th, 5th-4th shifting the 4Runner does on even minor highway grades or heavy wind (both of which are common for where I live). Drone, drone, drone. Waaaaaaaa, wuuuuuuuuuu, waaasaaaaa, wuuuuuuuuuuuuuu. That's what you hear. You can hear the truck doing that very thing constantly in Doug's video as well and he's just cruising around San Diego. I dumped that POS exhaust after 6 months. I feel really bad for people that buy a Pro and are stuck with that POS exhaust. It's unbelievable to me that Toyota actually makes this an OEM part :pound:

I'm all about back-up cameras so as long as the driver uses them in addition to their mirrors and looking over their shoulder, etc. The technology has been around for nearly 20 years now and is tried and true. A broken back-up camera on a 4Runner is something like $70. Same goes for USB ports. This isn't cutting edge tech at all.

The things that give me the most pause about tech is the usage of full digital clusters, HVAC, and stereo controls. A failure of these screens could render a vehicle undriveable/inoperable and that's not exactly ideal for vehicles that may be 100+ miles from the nearest recovery service. Automakers love the screens because it makes things more simple for them if there is an issue. They simply swap in a new screen and done.

Hopefully Toyota will give the new 4Runner the reliable and updated tech it needs like a more fuel efficient and powerful motor (i.e., not low end torque), an 8 speed auto, full LED/HID lighting throughout, and standard creature/convenience comforts while avoiding the usage of lots of screens.

Hey, I'm just happy I can now afford my Venti Pumpkin Spice Latte with extra whip extra caramel and espresso shot to get me through my stressful day working down at Dollar Tree part time. Now if they would just raise the minimum wage again I'd be really set!

Honestly though, having someone say that they are too cool for a back up camera "because they know how to drive unlike us entitled millennials" is a little...silly.

you do you...but even though I can afford a fancy coffee drink I cant make myself pay for it in most instances. I have been in the food industry and coffee is one of the largest margin items you can sell. I know companies should make a profit, and good for them. I'd rather make it at home.

regarding cameras...i think the point is...there is no replacement for good old fashioned mirrors and situational awareness. Yes, cameras do satisfy those things, but camera field of view, and quality vary by maker...so you should always be able to have the skills to operate with out he camera.

think of it as BUIS.....(if you know what those are)

Its still crazy how much fancy coffee drinks cost..even regular coffee....
Visiting Charleston sc all week, and just bought two iced coffees yesterday while we were walking around and it was just over 7 bucks.

So does reliance on the back-up camera tell you where the vehicle is relative to a garage door opening when backing out? Nope. Case closed. Enjoy your Starbucks frapucchino while getting your manicure.

P.S. you couldn’t afford my ‘73 Ford Bronco with hand crank windows and shitty mileage, but you’d love it’s off-road capabilities, though they wouldn’t make you a better driver on or off-road.

If your argument is to call out one specific use case where a backup camera may not be ideal because your wife hit the garage, then so be it. But, I (and I'm sure literally everyone else) can think of 50 others when it is useful.

I find this hilarious that there are now 2 call outs on my supposed financial situation, my sexual preference, or political affiliation because I called someone a Boomer. This place cracks me up sometimes. Bless your hearts.

Wait a minute. The 4Runner is a terrible purchase and you should be ashamed of yourself. Look at this list of negatives, incomplete for sure since I have to run out and prove my superiority to others today and don't have much time to chat with the likes of you:

1. It uses gas. GAS! Do I need to say more? Just awful in today's enlightened and progressive age
2. Toyota doesn't feature it in commercials cleaning trash off of the beach or helping pet adoption centers like Subaru does with the Outback
3. It doesn't have every new tech gizmo known to God.
4. It is reliable and therefore does not contribute to the economy the way vehicles that constantly break down do
4. You don't see any Hollywood types driving one. If Leonardo DiCaprio doesn't own one, why should I?
5. Most people who own one actually like their rig. Aren't people supposed to be unhappy and unsatisfied with everything in their life these days?

When my 2023 TRD ORP comes in from the factory, I'm going to be ashamed of myself too.

Don't know about most people but am certainly not included in that.

The 4Runner purchase that was made by me was after a long search for a vehicle which would last a long time.

Previously owned ford and its commonly known they have multiple problems with their electrical systems ie ford exploder. The chevy silveradro had failed piston rings after 120,000 miles and my '15 tacoma started having transmission problems after 40,000 miles.

The result was going back to an suv completely built in japan with apparently one of the most dependable drivetrains around. the low-tech features available were not even considered, only the tow weight rating and availability of 4 wheel drive.

And am very happy to have found this forum, the insights of others here with their helpful experiences and willingness to share is so helpful.

If you are one of the rich elite and trade in your vehicle every 2 years then none of this means anything to you. To each his own, your allowed to do that. For myself am quite satisfied with my purchase. Now that I am retired, a dependable vehicle is nothing for me to worry about anymore.

I’m glad I’m old. Old enough to see how much vehicles have changed - both in positive and negative ways. Old enough to appreciate how much fun I had in the old days with those basic old 4x4 trucks. Old enough to remember bouncing all over the wide open desert spaces that are now buried under urban sprawl. I have fond memories of my old ‘70 Ford F-250 4x4 with no power anything, rough ride, no AC and rubber floors that took me all over the intermountain west; but I am thankful for my ‘18 SR5 because it’s comfortable, versatile and works for me and the the environment I live in.
 
I chose my 17 SR5 4runner for the (relative) lack of doodads. Proven capability and reliability. I saw them everywhere but found few listed for sale. Must be a reason for that.
I buy to use for a long time. I don't buy to later resell to chase "the latest and greatest". That's why I also still drive my 99% original 68 F100. It was my daily driver for 35 years.
Other than a Fiat (it was free) my 4runner is the first non big 3 vehicle I ever bought. With regular maintenance, it should outlive this boomer.
