Push button start on 2020s sr5 premiums....

If the fob battery dies will you get stranded and not be able to start it. Lets say pushing button with fob does not do it you SOL?

You guys carry spare fob batteries and leavem somewhere? Just trying to learn about these newer 4 runners.

Holding the fob against the ignition button will turn the truck on even if the battery is dead.

Plus you get a couple months of low battery warnings from the cluster display ahead of time.

Lots of vehicles are built to handle this. If the FOB gets wet at the beach or something. Typically they have a removable METAL key for getting in, then you can use the passive transponder chip in the housing to start the vehicle.

I’ve been through a couple batteries at this point, each time they died I held the fob by the button and it started. The tech works.

i actually had this happen to me with my mother in laws nissan sentra.. she ignored the low battery warnings. and a display comes up when you sit in the car with a dead fob and illustrates to hold the fob up to the pushbutton

What if you loose it while camping? Do you have a hide a key fob? I like a good old fashioned key so I can start my car like a guy and keep a hidden key for emergency.

Now, I do wish my ignition was dash mounted so the keychain wouldn’t rub my leg when wheeling. That would be a nice change.

I am trying to order one now and not happy with the push start and keyless touch entry at all.
I was hoping they had options not too.
Yea, worrying about the push button actually breaking is a scare for me versus a simple key.
Also, after reading about crooks and scanners and how they can simply read the codes and use that to open and start you car kinda scares me.
Unfortunately, looks like I have no choice..
And that key fob is really gonna take up space in my pocket.
Guess its the wave of the future.
I would still rather have push button unlock and a key with that chip in it..sigh.
I hope we can key start if there are issues.

Agreed!! Seems many in this thread have never experienced push button start or keyless entry and just aren't educated on the convenience.

Seriously, push button start and keyless entry are the best features of newer cars. After having this feature on my vehicles for the past 4 years it would be hard to go without.

Car makers aren't stupid, they know that the general public isn't smart and doesn't take care of their stuff. They have thought of all the "what if's" that can happen and have added redundant controls in place to compensate for this. If you're car battery is dead, a key isn't going to help you.

Just curious, has anyone ever experienced a push button start failure? I have certainly experienced failures with a traditional key system.

By the way, if you ever have a runaway car, you can just hold the push button to kill the engine.

My Limited comes with a key in the fob… you can also just get another key cut or use the key in the second FOB.

I haven’t had much concern about losing keys, I put my keys in a pack or zip up cargo pants or something. Loosing my keys while camping is even less of a concern with the FOB because I am handling it less.

If you really wanted to be super safe, you can always just get a realtor lockbox and just secure the physical key that’s inside the FOB, to the car itself. I see the surfers do this a lot at the beach.

Passive entry, keypad, push to start

Has any one tried installing a remote start thats passive keyless entry, w a keypad, push to start that you can hook up to you phone? I have a 2016 4R trail edition that is like to have that on.

Not sure if they are the best features of new cars but I agree - convenient, criminal element in these parts have been quite busy lately with Toyota & Lexus vehicles. Friend at work lost her Limited from a Commuter Lot this past fall... cops figure they scan the fob from the residence then grab the vehicle the next place you leave it. Less risk involved for them.

Mine went suddenly dead overnight. No warning on dash.
