Push Start

Unless you have a system where you can keep the key in your pocket, I think it's pretty pointless.



There are people on this site who never go off road but lift their trucks and have huge tires. What's your point? His truck, he wants a Push Start button, big deal. My S2000 has one, it's fun.
 
I even found the 1996 Power diagram and it is almost the same colors at the key switch as the other years. Accessory is black/red. Note the pinout diagram on the last page for the key switch. This is also the same.

My point being, they make remote starts that can operate this way. Why have to turn a key then push a button. Pretty dumb IMO, or am I not allowed to have an opinion?
 
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Why have a system where you put the key in and then have more steps to start the truck than stock? Other than of course "because i can".

Well let's face it, a lot of what we do is only because we can. If he wants to do it, more power to him.

When my son was about 4 or 5 I had a 51 Chevy that I wired to start with a push button using a latching relay set up I found online. I could let him start the truck using the button, but it couldn't move until I put the key in the ignition and unlocked the steering. We had fun with it. And that is the only point right?

If I reverse this so that the blanks are on the opposite side then it lines up with the diagram:
Before:
Pin 1: (ignition) black and yellow
Pin 2: (ACC) blue
Pin 3: (power) white
Pin 4: blank
Pin 5: (Start) black and white
Pin 6: (power??) black
Pin 7: (ignition 2) blue
Pin 8: blank
After:
Pin 1: blank
Pin 2: (power) white
Pin 3: (ACC) blue
Pin 4: (ignition) black and yellow
Pin 5: blank
Pin 6: (ignition 2) blue
Pin 7: (power??) black
Pin 8: (Start) black and white

So for some reason mine must just be flopped!

I don't think that is what he's doing, I think it will be a one button to crank/start system. The key will be to unlock the steering.

Ok, let's go with the after. Note the pinouts are for the connector plug, not the switch unit. I would then use Pin 6 blue for your ignition source and pin 7 black for B+ power, keeping things all on the AM2 circuit with the Pin 8 Start wire.

You could really rice it out and put this in. Not something I would do, but the kind of thing my kid would do and I would help with. No real point, but it looks cool (to some) and you learn something about wiring. $15 on e-bay from China.

I was thinking about doing this a few days ago, glad somebody else has started! Definitely subbed for this one!

Since you have a 99 you should be able to follow the first wiring diagram that [MENTION=10169]TheDurk[/MENTION] posted. Hope that makes it a little easier for you, if you go ahead and purchase a kit. Love the button btw.
 
I have one. Here's some quotes from my build thread.

Installed a RFID push button start in place of the key. I removed the key cylinder and put the button in its place. To remove the cylinder put the key in and turn to ACC and then there is button underneath that you push and the cylinder slides out. By leaving the switch to ACC it disables the wheel lock. To stop from draining power, I just completely unplugged the ignition wires. The button only gets power when the RFID tag is within a close range.


It was some chinese brand off eBay for $80

More on the push button start.


It came with these RFID tag fobs to work as a key chain.

I found those to be too big, so I ordered a more streamline RFID tag.
Its a thin little round sticker.

Removed the screw on the back of the viper alarm remote and took off the back and then put the sticker inside the back of the remote.

Programmed the RFID tag with the system and now all I need to carry is my viper remote and have no keys or extra key chains hanging around.
 
So no more steering lock? I actually like that idea. Do you know if there are some name brand RFID systems out there? Can I ask more dumb questions?

Nope, no more steering lock. I removed the key cylinder but it's totally reversible if need be. I have had it for over a year and am very pleased. I have had no issues whatsoever.

There is this brand that seems to be good. Advanced Keys - AK-104B Smart Key with Push Start System

But that ones almost $400 with shipping and you have to carry around a fairy thick credit card like thing in your wallet. The good thing about that one is that it's a stronger signal so you can be around your car and it will unlock and then you can get in and start. I still have to unlock my truck and then have the rfid tag within a few inches of the antenna.

Used this and everything worked great! Will have a few pictures tomorrow once I get everything mounted up.
