I had an '88 truck with the 22RE I know how good those are, I sold it for $800after it had been stolen and stripped but found by the cops a few weeks later. I had already bought my 4runner and was in a different place, had that happened now I would have just kept it and turned it into a wheeler. miss that truck.

Your high mileage should be no reason to want to sell, all vehicles need maintanence, about $500 is cheap....
Now if your sick of looking at her, doesn't get you off anymore, and you just want something different, that's a more acceptable reason to sell.
I will do motor swap if/when mine goes, I'd like to get to the 500k club, but I'm only half way there. In the mean time I will continue to enjoy this runner.

i have had it since 2004 (with 65k, misquoted 45k earlier)and it's been my DD (and then some) ever since. i have been playing with the idea of retiring it from DD for a couple years but it just keeps going and i'm putting very little into it(in the long run). i always look at other options - a civic, corolla, jetta that i could get for commuter but then it's a payment and more time to break even (on fuel savings) so i put it off.. next year my F350 will be paid off so i think at that point i will actually get a commuter and save the 4runner for ski trips to the pass.. seems to make the most sense to me at this time..

not gonna lie, i have never been concerned about the reliability of this thing because it has never given me a reason to worry. it just keeps going..

Sounds like you have answered your own question. These 4runners don't eat much and you know everything that has been done to yours. If you have noticed on this site, a lot of guys who have sold their 3rd gens regret having done so and go right out and buy another one. Keep it!:nod:

you guys are showing some serious, enthusiastic support, it's amazing not one person has encouraged me to dump it (low resale value aside); in fact, some are even saying that once the motor goes, put another one in and keep on trucking! if that doesn't say a lot for this brand/model i don't know what does.

thanks for the compliments on the appearance/condition of my rig. even though white paint seems to hold appearance better over time it does still look good. i do want to change up the wheels once i take care of the mechanical issues but that is another topic.

i'll be checking around today for best pricing on LBJ and CV axle, if anyone has suggestions on best place online to get OEM parts fire away.

Olathe Toyota , Olathe Kansas. I don't know about your local dealer but my local dealer actually matched the price that Olathe Toyota had on their site. Olathe has good prices and they also have an Ebay store if your local dealer won't accommodate. I am trying to buy OEM for everything. Some things such as LBJs should only be bought OEM in my opinion. I have seen too many failures on this site of aftermarket LBJs. Pictures say 1000+ words in this case. Good luck!

I'm sort of in the same boat as the OP. I've got around 240k miles. It seems mechanically sound, all the features and buttons still work (unlike my last Chevy where a window motor or blower motor would go out every week it seemed), the A/C still works... I see no reason to sell mine.

So I replaced the LBJs, bypassed the stock trans cooler, and will keep on driving it.

I'm debating this right now. 97' limited 4x4 (214k)that I bought as a third vehicle, but after driving it, I am thinking of selling my DD '13 Jetta. She is in great shape minus a few body dings (most that paintless dent repair could probably fix), but we are considering selling and buying a lower mile 3rd gen. Interior smells like old man (original owner...haha) and the leather front seats have cracks in the leather, but Ian guessing that I could replace the seats, carpet, and headliner for less than the loss of upgrading ($3500 for her before new factory LCAs, LR UCAs, 5100s all around. Have a new radiator, tie rod ends, and extended sway bar links to put in).

I daily drive my 244,000 mile '98. I leave my BMW 740i home and drive the 4Runner everywhere. (I'm actually considering selling the BMW, only out 3,200 miles on it last year)
Keep your truck. Do the few things it needs and keep driving.

Most definitely. About 32mpg vs 15mpg. But the 4Runner is paid for.

I now have 318k on this beast..one issue, discovered the carpet was wet in the cargo area near the door. Is there a common spot where these leak? Do I just need to replace the entire moulding around the hatch?

Pull down the headliner in the back by the hatch, if you find water on top of it, it's the roof rack bolt holes, you just pull them out and put some new silicone in them and put RTV over each one, if there's no water there, it's most likely the rear hatch seal or little rubber boot that the hatch wiring goes through.
