Put to shame by an H3 & Durango

My mistake,,

Actually the curb weight (not GVWR) of a last gen Durango is 4700lbs which is just about 150 more than the 4th gens and the H3s weigh the same 4700lbs. Where was the 1000 more lbs coming from?

I checked the specs on KBB but I was looking @ the 06 durango... Haha heres my foot going into my mouth now. :bash:

I was just a little miffed. I go out and practice with this unique 4x4 system and yes it does amaze me . I've been through a lot of stuff and this is one of the best 4x4's I've had (hands down) , getting to know the system takes a little bit of practice compared to what I'm used to from domestic vehicles.

Tonite we went out a little for wheeling , since they were giving the "stay off the roads , high wind , snow & drifting"..... that usually my clue :D

It performed flawlessly tonight , did some pretty huge hill climbs that that the Durango couldn't make it very easy , so it was his turn to be miffed at his truck. I pulled him up the last 10 feet of the last hill. Had no problems with the ruts ect.. but this time he was following my lead.

I do want new tires ! That should make a lot of difference compared to the Revos in the snow and off road and hopefully a 1" front end lift to give me a little in the front.

Tonite was a fun night , more snow blowing and drifting tomorrow.

Well on the subject of off-roading in snowish places, today I was with a friend and we went to all sorts of places where the Runna never complained, except when I accidentally got it high centered off a snow drift. Man, was my hands cold trying to dig out from the low points, we finally got out as I remembered the rocking method, man do I feel like a dumbass. 30 minutes of trying different combinations and such and the rocking method got me out in 3 minutes flat. The fact how high centered it was and how 2 wheels had no traction, and how it just poof came out, really amazed me. There was a farmer who passed by and stopped and asked if we were stuck before I remembered the rocking method. He went to go get a tractor, but we got out and went to his farm to thank him for his future helpfulness. The fact that the snow was sold from all the rain we had didn't help at all, it was pretty much like putting your truck on cinder blocks. I'm sure if i had a lift I probably would have had no problem, but the fact that everything is stock except the Revo's and how it went trough all sorts of stuff in one day, snow hills, mud, snow field, snow bank, snow drift, huge water puddles (yes the car has a layer of ice on it right now). Well hopefully this relates somewhat to the subject if not, my bad. Oh also the gas cover was frozen so now it sticks out like a little more than a quarter inch, any way to fix that?

Don't feel bad , its very easy to get high centered if your wheeling in some heavy wet snow. To be honest I dragged my belly more times than I can remember in the snow and the snow was so deep I honestly was amazed I made it through , and had no problems.

My skid plates have so many , scrapes and dings , a few cornstalk remnants on them. I know they aare not the greatest plates but do the job.

Yes the add'l clearance would def. help to an extent and sometime not at all , simply because you know you have more clearance and will take on even more challenging obstacles , deeper mud , bigger snow drifts , taller ruts , .....lol , you know where I'm going with that gizmo.

Yes I indeed do know where you are going, somewhere where my impulses will take me too far, then I'm screwed...lol. I noticed when I detailed the car the other day that the skid plate is beat up, eventually I will replace them with better ones, probably from AlexJet, and get a lift, I can see getting an all out lift in the future. The Revo's actually surprised me in the places I went last night, for an all-terrain highway tire, it really impressed me, those dunflops wouldn't have gotten me anywhere. As far as what AlexJet said "Heat gun, smiley wink" I wish it was that easy I put my key in there to pry it open but then figured out that as soon as i let go of the release cable it goes back to closed.

The H3 is not surprising but the Durango certainly is.

Maybe the Durango was actually on fire and melted its way through the snow! I just read that Chrysler is recalling a bunch of them because they go up in flames (Saw it in the Washington Post).

PS---Sorry for the absense....been paintballing and working a ton. I am still here, and my baby is still my 4runner

It's a different ball game in snow from all other off road conditions. Also, snow can be in so many different states. What works great in powdery fresh snow may suck in packed wet icy snow.

It all boils down to the tires getting bite and traction. Tread pattern/compound (and the current temp), tread depth, and weight play really important roles to getting that little bit of traction. While some of you may think Revo's are great in certain snow conditions, it may suck in others or when the temps really plunge turning the compound hard as rock. I really think that has a lot to do with it seeing how Revo's tend to have higher treadwear and hard compounds.

4Lo is not really called for in snow as you can't put down the torque down anyways. You need to keep momentum and your wheels spinning so lock that center diff.

I say it was just a fluke...wrong (worn) tires in the wrong conditions. Get some more aggressive tires and don't look back.

Its not a big deal , I've been out wheeling with the Durango guy a few time since and he always has more of a struggle that I do. When that dreadful nite happened he was proud as hell , but usually has his tail between his legs mostly.

I think I'm going to sway him the Toyota way eventually.
