PUZZLER - Clicking noise from the front passenger side

Guys,
I am in a dilemma because people cannot pinpoint or diagnose the issue I have with my 4Runner.

I have a 2011 with ICON Stage 1 and Light Racing UCAs-I got about 65K on the truck and about 35K on this kit.

Over the last month or so, I started hearing a clicking/clunking noise coming from the front end (passenger side from what I can tell) while going over small bumps in the road. Now here is the strange part, I do not hear it first thing after I start driving but perhaps 5-10 minutes into the drive, I begin hearing the sounds. Here is another strange part; the sounds cannot be replicated if I am driving over a speedbump and I have tested many speedbumps to test that theory. The clicking sound can only be heard as I am driving down the road and any minor imperfection or bump will cause the clicking. I also can feel some feedback in the steering wheel every time I hear the clicking noise. Standing still, if I turn the steering full right or left, I cannot replicate the sound. The only way I can replicate is by the right wheel contacting any tiny bump or imperfection.

So here's what I have done so far.
1)As I was getting my 60K service at the dealer, I asked them to check it out and they just blew it off blaming the aftermarket suspension.
2)A few days later, I took it to firestone (yeah I know) and asked them to check it out - They checked out the suspension and everything else and claim all seems good.
3)I am in South Florida (Miami) right now and found out about Karnage Motorsports. They have a very good reputation and were very professional. They checked out the ICON kit as well as suspension and steering but did not find anything wrong either. As a matter of fact, initially they couldn't hear the sound but after I drove the car for 10-15 minutes and took it back to them, they sound came back and they did notice the clicking noise from inside the cabin and even when he was walking alongside the car on the front passenger side.

So to sum it up, the clicking noise comes after the car has been driven for 5+ minutes and it is coming from the front right side. The noise is made as I am driving down the road over any small bump/imperfection and it's quite noticeable. I can also feel some feedback in the steering. 3 separate places have checked out the vehicle but no one seems to be able to find the issue but the guys at Karnage did hear the sound (he is going to ask around to see if he can find something).

I am just about done and I am at a point where I just want to get rid of the vehicle since I am not sure if something is going to collapse on me on the interstate at 70mph.

It only has 65000 miles so I do not want to get rid of it so please, if anyone has had this issue or have a remote idea of what I am talking about, please let me know.

If you know of any other good spots in South Florida who can check it out, let me know.

I AM STUMPED!!!!:noidea:

Is it a rotational ticking, as in the frequency of clicking increases with speed?

Obvious things off the top of my head would be a rock in the tire treads or something with the cv. Curious to see what others think. Goodluck.

I'm an idiot, but sounds like it happens when the shock fluid warms up. Does you shock setup have reservoirs? I'm guessing you would have noticed any leaking or obvious signs of damage. Perhaps the shocks internal valve is stuck or sticking and not letting fluid move as it should?

It is not rotational since it is present at the very slow and higher speeds. It is dependent on what the front right wheel drives over.

Yup, he checked both of the shocks (ICONS) and no leak. I cannot see any leak either.

Check your cv axle, the joints make a clicking noise when they go bad

I was assuming that the mechanics checked that when they checked the suspension and steering but who knows. Thank you.

Perhaps call Icon, 35k miles seems a little premature but the coilovers may need to be rebuilt. I don't know how handy you are but you could swap the coilovers from side to side to see if that has any effect. If anything it will narrow it down.

Try snugging up the top mount bolts. They may seem tight, but I've had an instance where the suspension made a clunk/rattle only over surfaces like you talk about right after I did the install. Put it back on the lift, snugged the corner that was making noise up, and all was good.

If nothing else, its easy enough to give it a try.

Thanks. According to Karnage, the shocks looked fine with no sign of leakage or anything. I will keep that in mind as we continue to diagnose.

I guess I should have said in my post but I am a total dumbass when it comes to cars. What is this top mount bolt you are talking about?

Check the sway bar end links- mine are just about shot. If the grease is gone they will make noise...

Thanks Antman. I will add that to the checklist of various suggestions here on the thread. Now which one to check first and who in South Florida is detailed enough to check it out. I will keep you fellas updated. Keep your diagnostics coming and thank you.

I am new to the area and just joined the group but some of the guys on Florida 4Runners may know who to talk to. I am limited in my car knowledge as well but there are some local guys who are well informed.
Here is the link to the group, a lot of them are also on this forum.

Check the pivot bolt on your upper control arms. Depending on the vintage of the bushings, the older versions had a lot of friction and tended to back the nut off. It's dark under there and hard to see, but if the nut comes loose it will allow the UCA to move and give you a loose change in your pocket noise to a clunk. I've had the nut come loose several times and I check mine every few thousand miles just to be safe.

Got it checked out from another place. They insist it is the UCA Ball Joint. Does that sound like a good diagnostic of the issue?

Parts seem to be cheap....Ideas?

That could be it. Your ICON set up could be reaching the limit of travel for the ball joint leading to fast wear. My son has a long travel front set up and went through a couple of LR UCA ball joints pretty quickly. He has switched to uniball UCA's. I carry a spare just in case. They are relatively cheap and easy to replace.
