question about back spacing and offest

Basically, (in regards to tires rubbing the UCAs) the offset doesn't matter as long as the backspacing is correct. For 285s, 4.25" BS is the sweet spot.

Another note.. Offset can get really confusing because it's measured by overall rim width. The reason it's confusing is a 17x8 wheel is actually 9" wide (outside edge to outside edge). A 16x7 is actually 8" wide. In your case, a 17x9 is actually 10" wide.

My recommendation is.. don't worry about the offset unless you are trying to figure out if the wheels will clear the brake calipers.

I plan to do the 231mm TBU one day, so this is important to me with my current 285s...

For 16" and larger wheels, the inside diameter doesn't have anything to do with clearing the 231s. The part of the wheel that may come into contact with the calipers is the inside "face" of the wheels. If the wheel's face is too close to the mounting flange, then it will hit the outside face of the caliper. This is where offset is important.

Im gonna bump this thread back open....

my last tacoma, I used stock wheels, much bigger tires, and spacers.
this time around I want to get aftermarket wheels with the bigger tires, and not use a spacer.

What needs to change from stock BS/offset to the new wheels, so there is as minimal rubbing as possible?

How thick was your spacer? What was the backspace on the stock wheels? Subtract the spacer width from the old backspace and you'll have your desired backspace for the aftermarket wheels.

That assumes the suspension and tire size haven't changed between your Taco and 4Runner. If it's not the same front end or it's a different tire size, then you're going to have to get out the measuring tape.

For 3rd gens, the best combo is a 4.5" BS with a -6 offset. There are a few of us that run that wheel with 285s, and have no real problems. I have a couple inches of clearance with the UCA, and I didn't have to trim any body panels or deal with the pinch weld. If you have a Limited, you may have to trim the flare that is on the front bumper, but thats not too bad.

I have swapped out from a Toyota 5 Star to the MB Trackers. MB wheel specs @16X8.5 6-139.7 -6MTB. Prior to the Trackers I used Spidertrax 1.25" wheel spacers to get the wheels far enough to sit away from my UCA that my 285/75R16's wouldnt rub. I can now run the Trackers without a wheel spacer and have 3/4" to 1" of clearance.

Yes. In theory, you should be able to run a 315mm tire with those wheels as well. I only know of one 3.5bs wheel that fits 4runners though.

so it looks like im gonna be running a -10 offset with 4.30" backspacing on a 8.5" 17 rim... and a 305 70 17 tire... what say you wheel experts, should i run the spacer, or could i get away without the spacer and how much further will this set up stick out past my current set up if the stock tundra 17x7.5 wheels with the 285 tires?

I'm looking for the same thing here but i'm worried about the wheels rubbing on the body, specifically turning. anyone have a good way to figure this out? and what kind of lift are you running on these?
