Question about Intake mod ISR Delete

Too Big. its closer to 2.75" if I remember correctly. Correct fit is important for intake components. Why does it matter though? You can get a muffler shop to make you a pipe of the right size for $15-$20
 
I have not seen any evidence to show there's anything to be gained with the ISR mod, minus the noise. Some saw a slight MPG increase (claimed) with the Air-Raid pipe but that's it.
 
huh! I too was wondering why a short length of PVC or ABS wouldn't work! here's a question, where does the extra noise actually come from????
 
The factory pipe has odd shapes and chambers connected to it. These trap sound and deflect sound, much like the factory muffler does. I'm not a physicist so I don't know exactly how it works, something about bouncing sound waves back at the incoming sound to cancel it out.

By removing those, there's no more sound barrier and it's louder.

I have some 3in pvc from when I built my house and was just curious if it would work and I hadn't seen anyone do it. I'll have to take my intake apart and measure and have a muffler shop cut me a piece I was just wondering why you couldn't use plastic but I guess the size is the answer. Thank you

PVC also would not work well because of the wall thickness of PVC. People use turned exhaust pipe because it has a very thin wall and can be exact fit on the outer diameter while not impacting the inner diameter for air flow.
 
And the main improvement from this mod is throttle response, MPG is better in theory but would be hard to measure to prove due to small gains.
 
Question is will the factory tubing fit over the 3" PVC pipe's outside diameter? The inside diameter should still be larger than 2.75" exhaust tubing unless that's some really thick wall PVC you're using.

I'd think that the thick walls of the PVC would create turbulence inside of the intake tube, which is what you don't want. I got an intake pipe made by an exhaust shop, and noticed no difference in sound or power. The only reason to do this is to un-clutter the engine bay a bit.
 
seems to me the hot set-up (if you really want to do it) is the guy that made the plug that fits inside the stock port that comes off the side. also a easy place for the vacuum hoses!

How would wall thickness effect turbulence? Or are you saying on either side of the PVC pipe where it meets the factory piping it would cause turbulence?
 
Gotcha. And I agree with you. That's to much of a step. Not like it would make a huge difference overall but if you are doing this to remove stuff and make for better airflow why negate that work with a chunk of PVC.
