Question about intakes

I don't think it would have any major drawbacks at all. The only thing is that it may be an inefficient use of your money. It seems people haven't experienced very worthwhile gains from installing one. I did a K&n drop in filter for cost-saving reasons, but I did notice a little better response and sound at higher rpms. It was only $45 and I think it is a good middle-ground and gives a much better bang for your buck.
I don't know if I have the money to be talking about superchargers, but what kind of improvements would be possible with the intake and exhaust combo?

I installed a Volant CAI intake, after previously going with a complete Magnaflow cat-back exhaust system. The look and sound of both together is incredible. Definitely worth it for those reasons alone. I do have a very noticeable power increase, but nothing off of the charts. As for mileage, I really don't see any change over the long haul.
I have a V8 and frankly thought that it sounded pretty mild before. So for the awesome growl and look I am very happy with it. I did spend $425 on the Magnaflow and $279 for the Volant so it was not cheap.

I installed the K&N Cold Air Intake and I gained 10hp and I also get better gas mileage as well! Plus I LOVE the way it sounds, putting a CAI on the 4runner is WELL worth it. 10hp may sound small, but it is actually quite a bit.
I disagree with those who said that there is no gain, Seriously WTF? I am guessing they dont have one....

Do you have the V6 or V8? 10hp increase, maybe but its really hard for me to believe that you have any increase in gas mileage. Louder intake sound+"10hp"= lead foot!! Lead foot= poor mpg's. Ive never seen any increase in mpg's on any vehicle ive put a CAI on. Ive noticed slight increases in throttle response and power but never gas mileage.

Yup, I have absolutely seen better gas mileage, by about 0.5mpg, I jumped from 21.0mpg to 21.5mpg on average after I installed the CAI(highway). This was something I noted very distinctly before and after I installed it, I wanted to see if it would go up in mpg or down. I was honestly surprised as well, once I quit hot rodding it around, most people have no idea it is on and you get better gas mileage. I love it!
For me CAI does not equal lead foot, it is an option, but if you drive consciously, you will get better gas mileage. Mine is a 2008 V6 as well(stock exhaust), I do love revving it up, however it is only obnoxiously loud if I go above 3,500 RPM, anything under that and you would have no idea there was a custom CAI on it. :thumb3:

I second this..Myself and SkylineGTRracer both have mods that some on here..prob. wouldnt do for the reasons we do but either way..U could give them a shout or myself up to u.

He already stated he doesnt have a Cold Air Intake, he has the factory intake system, care to explain what you mean? (Factory is not a CAI)
From what I read, you must not know the difference between a CAI and a standard intake system.

The 4runner is pulling air from inside the fender on the passenger side... that's as cold air as you get! Drop in the K&N to that and you'll get as much as most aftermarket kits will. Maybe you didn't understand COLD AIR INTAKE as opposed to AFTERMARKET INTAKE :frog: Most intake systems stock on cars now are cold air intakes and colder air than the aftermarket intakes suck in from the engine bay. It's a joke the lack of power you get from most aftermarket systems unless you just like the noise you get from them... Pull your airbox off and look for the hole in the fender... that's where the cold air comes in.
you won't get any colder air, but you may get more air if you can pull the air from the grill to the intake.
If there was a simple way to do it I'd say lose some of the cats and just put one high-flow in their place as it'll buy you a good 30HP (removing all 3 on the 2gr-fe nets you 30-40HP to the wheels. we dyno'd 289 at the wheels as opposed to toyota's 270 at the engine). That would require an exhaust reworking, headers, and some 02 simulators for the 4runner though.

Technically, you dont have a CAI anymore. The K&N isnt a "cold air intake" since the filter isnt closed off from the hot air in the engine compartment. Volant is a true CAI.

The difference between a OEM and a well designed intake like the AFE is VOLUME. OEM was designed with three things in mind cost, emissions, and noise control. That is why it snakes around, has a hydrocarbon filter and has baffles. The AFE has a enclosed box then a 6in tube that goes to 3in and it curves alot less than the OEM. This keeps the rate of travel at a nice consistent level, there for maxing HP and TQ. There was a reason TRD had AFE made the 1st gen TRD intake. On a stock truck you should see 12wrhp threw out the powerband. Now you can get a K&N and its ok its just that it'll make gains from 4-5.5 rpm and it take alot longer for that system to get into ambient air temps which is what you want. The most important thing here though is keep you MAF happy. If you had a really badly design intake, your a/f ratios and fuel trims will suffer and the truck will run poor. Tuning is a major plus and there are some thing you can do and are budget friendly (URD maf cali for example), but if you want real power you'll have to pony up some major cash. It's all about what you want outta your truck and what your willing to spend to get it to that level.
