Question about replacing tires

This is a stupid question I know, but I am in need of new tires and the current tires are 265/70/16 but using the auto finder on a lot of sites for this make and model 4Runner (2002 SR5 4x4) it brings up a smaller tire like 225/75/15.

Is it possible to put a smaller tire on to save money or would I need new wheels?

You can only use 16" tires on a 16" wheel. You could get a smaller 16" tire...but it still has to be 16.

I'd recommend getting the stock size again....265/70R16.
 
Also if you look at thos4 sites it should have a Tab for additional oroptional sizes. The 265/70 16 is the stock size for your truck.
 
You will definitely need a tire that ends in 16 like quicksilvr said.

You can go down in size though, but I don't know why you would want to.
 
I wouldn't use the "vehicle guide" to look for tires, just look for them by tire size. A lot of times those "vehicle guides" are wrong anyway.

From what I've seen, 265/75/16 is at least as common as 265/70/16. 265/75 tires are the same width and maybe a half inch or so taller, but should fit fine on your 4runner.
 
OK, that makes more sense. If 265/70/16 is stock then I will stick with that.

Anyone know of a good place to get decent tires for a decent price? It's probably too much to ship to get a decent price online.

I live in Kentucky near Louisville if anyone knows of a good place around here.

How long ago? My understanding is Michelin stopped making Cross Terrains in 265/70/16. Too bad, as I have 75K on mine and they have been great. Latitude Tour or LTX M/S or A/T is all you can find on Tirerack.com
 
Free shipping is great. How hard is it to swap out the tires yourself? Don't you need a special tool to get the old on off and the new one on?
 
You better have a few guys with you and a case of beer to take those tires off by hand! Better to just bring them to a local tire shop. Shop around on the internet, some 4wheeling mags have ads in them running tire specials, and it all depends what kind of tire you are looking for. More specialized the tire, the more expensive.
