Question about switching to Mobil 1 synthetic engine oil

I'm comfortable with extended oil change frequencies with synthetics, having operated and maintained more than 3 vehicles that have gone beyond 200,000 miles before being sold which were still running flawlessly. I have 3 other vehicles currently on synthetics with one over 175,000 miles which are maintained on a ~10,000 mile oil change interval.

I don't expect ANYONE to take my word. Do what makes YOU feel comfortable.

i don't care what anecdotal evidence you bring to the table. this is not education. you're comfortable. you may be comfortable with not flossing your teeth every night. 3 vehicles? so you can speak to the XXX,XXX 4runners out there? LOL

These are the FACTS; the 4.0 and 4.7 engines are very gentle on oil. With dino you can safely run the oil 7000 miles. With synthetic you can go 10K miles. If you get a UOA you may be able to go even further. Any one who is putting big miles in a year should get a UOA so they can run the oil as long as it provides safe protection. In the case of going 30K miles a year I would highly recommend using a bypass system. I had one on my 05 V8 and had over 40K miles on the same oil and it was still providing PROVEN (UOA every year) safe protection. Here is the install.

My sole reason for switching to synthetic was for the extended oil change frequency, period. Dino oil needs to be changed at 3000 miles; synthetic blends at 5000-7500 miles and full syns at 8000 or longer.

Dino oil has improved drastically over the years. I don't know of any vehicle built in the past 5 (maybe even as long as 10 years) that recommends a 3k oil change interval. I also don't know of any manufacturer who recommends a different oil change interval for synthetic oil.

As for Bob the Oil guy.....Have to wonder how skewed his tests are about synthetic oil since he's an Amsoil Oil distributor (or at least use to be).

as everyone knows i am a BIG fan of M1 because it just plain works..it has kept one of our trucks going almost a million miles. so yes i think you should switch oil.

here is a pic of M1 on the dipstick after a year inside the 4runner engine. I use M1 Extended performance but i am seriously thinking about pennzoil ultra synthetic

Legendary 3.4l in the 3rd gen. I don't care what oil you're using, that thing won't ever die.

Well then it looks like I'll be switching from 5w-30 valvoline high mileage synthetic blend to mobil 1 5w-30 full synthetic. What are y'alls OCI with the stock oil filter? I know that they don't mean that is how long I should or shouldn't wait to change mine but I am curious.

I've run every brand of oil filter out there including oem and those extended ones that are just over an inch larger than stock. In my opinion, it really doesn't matter which one you go with. I think that most guys stick to a brand or oem because of loyalty, no necessarily better or worse performance.

I've been running Pennzoil Platinum for quite a few years in my Toy PU and 4Runner after switching from M1. Reason... the PP was a lot quieter. With the M1, a lot louder. YMMV.

Also have used Toy OEM filters, Pure One, K&N, M1, Bosch Distance... never had a problem with any.

Currently have four months left on extended warranty so have been changing oil and filter every six months.

Been thinking of extending oil and filter change interval with a Penn Plat Ultra (if I can ever find it here in Denver) along with M1 filter. We'll see if I do that or continue with every six month's oil change.

Either PP or M1 is good oil. Use what you like and see how your vehicle responds and sounds.

M1 comes in several flavors now. Lots of information about it on the forums. Most are not as good as the original one-and-only M1 of years ago.
