Apologize for asking this here..but i read the write up you guys already have posted about the brake swap and just needed some more info. I'm looking to replace my front rotors, brake pads, and calipers....can you guys guide me to where you all purchased your setup. I would like a setup that needs no modifications. Just straight bolt on....thanks in advance.

I got my parts from Rockauto.com, they're quite often the cheapest source.

Only modification needed was a slight trim on the dust shields.

Both the 199mm & 231mm are a direct bolt on. But with the larger 231mm calipers i had to trim the backing plates a lil bit to clear the calipers. I just used a pair of tin snipes to do the minor trimming. I have the 199's on my 2000 4runner and the 231's on my 1st gen 2004 tacoma. Best upgrade for the buck imo. I ordered my tundra brake parts from a parts warehouse that my work uses.

You have the part numbers? what year tundra did you use in the drop down field? I just don't want to make a mistake and order the wrong stuff

Yes its all in that thread Doc2012 posted above.

What most people do is buy OEM rotors and OEM pads from Toyota and then buy the calipers from NAPA (reman'd OEM calipers). All part numbers are in that thread.

With the exception of the smaller calipers (199mm), all the parts are the same size no matter where you buy them from. What makes the difference if you have to modify it or not is what kind of wheels you have.

I have factory wheels that came with the car.... Is that OK?

You're not giving enough info for us to help you. You need to post a picture of your wheels, or better yet look at the last part of the third post in the link referenced above. There's a list of wheels (most with pics I think) that clear 231. If your wheels aren't in that list, go with the 199. Part numbers are easily found in multiple threads here.

The stock 6 (in 3 groups) spoke wheels that many/most 3rd gens seemed to come with will not clear the larger brakes.

Bare minimum needed for those wheels are some 1/4" spacers. Then they fit fine, that's what my wife did on her '96 until she got some different wheels (and some 1" adapters).

My '99 came to me with some later model TRD Taco wheels that cleared them fine with no spacers.

Generally speaking, most wheel styles made later on will clear the larger brakes. They were made (I think) to fit on either Tundras (with the larger brakes stock) or Taco/4Runners.

Thanks I'll just go with the 199

My 231's are as firm as can be. It has everything to do with the quality of the pads and bedding procedure or if there's air in the system.

Like i mentioned above i have the 199's on my runner and 231's on my 1st gen tacoma, both vehicles have a firm pedal. I do keep the rear brakes adjusted.

Anyone know if it's necessary to change the brake/hard lines? Or can I just use the same ones? I ordered the Calipers, rotors and brake pads already

I reused my hard brake lines. They screwed right into the calipers just like the O.E.M. 4runner calipers.

but isn't the 199 smaller of the two for brake pads, isn't that part of the reason to do the upgrade, to get the big pads ( and the big rotors, which you will with the 199's

That's an interesting question... I'm guessing even if you go with the smaller pads, the Calipers and rotors perform better than the OEMS. I'm just guessing though, I'm clueless about this. I'll let you know how they feel tomorrow. My rotors needed replacing anyway so anything will feel better than before.

same situation

I am in the same situation but in the end I'm replacing my rims as well. I've been putting this mod off for 2yrs because of the rims. As above refer to to thread mentioned above. I looked into using the spacers but decided against it as the rim will no longer be hub centric which comes with its own issues. Or go with the 199s..
