Question about Tint

At first I had 20% on my front two windows and it matched the rears pretty well, except when it was really sunny outside and then the fronts were a little lighter.

After that I put 45% on the windshield and now it's perfect.

I am considering getting 20% put over all the back windows though. 1. To help reduce heat and 2. To make it a little darker during really bright days.

I was wondering if 20% over factory will still allow me to see out my back window enough to back up at night.

I think if I put 20% on the rears it would be in the 5% range.

15% on top of the factory rears would put you on the 5% range..

I'm not too worried about getting to a specific number, I'm more worried about if I will be able to see backing up at night.

I was always under the assumption that factory tint was in the 25%-35% range.

I can't remember off the top of my head. I'm thinking it's like $120-$140 for the backs.

My 4Runner had 5% all around except the front windshield when I got it. I don't have any problems backing up the vehicle. I did change the front windows to 35% to be legal as Hawaii police will give you a $287 ticket per window for illegal tint. Why the dark tint on the truck? The previous owner was a vice cop and used it once in a while for surveillance.

20% for the factory tint.. the shop that i usually go to was trying to charge me $160

Post some pics when you get your tint done i always wanted to see how it would look like.. i have 35% on my front windows now and was afraid that it might look to dark to get the cops attention in my area..

The back side windows might have been slightly more difficult to see into with 20%, although they would still be very easy to see through even from a distance. (Unless it was a cloudy day). 20% on the very back window is SUPER easy to see in/out. You can count how many people are in the seats, which way they are looking, if they are moving their hands, etc with 20% on the rear. (If you were driving behind them or standing behind them, looking into the truck).
This is because you have a clear windshield on the other side to lighten the effects of the tint, rendering it much less effective as privacy glass. You will have less of this problem since you tinted the windshield, but people behind you will still be able to see through your truck to the people in front of you.

If someone were standing on the other side of your vehicle with 20% on the sides, you could see them easily.

Don't worry, 20% isn't dark, you will be able to see fine.

Yeah, 20% isn't really dark. I'm not trying to head that direction though.

I'm auctually supprised at how much windshield tint helps.

I asked about 20% specifically because I don't want a huge difference in color between the fronts and the rears.

So basically I want to go as dark as I can and still be able to see out of the back at night and not have a huge difference in color.

blind- I'll take some when I get it done. It'll either be next week or the week after. Gotta buy some new headlights first.

It really depends on the angle of the sun and angle of the camera or angle you are looking at it. This is 20% over the factory and at this time of day there is no way you can see through the back.

I'll see if I can get some better tint pics later.

I guess at night with headlights shining in only 5% or double 5% will keep you from being seen.

You are correct about the angles, and how bright the sun is. That shot looks like it was taken on an overcast day?

Sunlight has the biggest affect on tint. The brighter the sun, the lighter the tint looks. The angle of the sun affects it as well.

On a bright day, you can see through your back window I am guessing though. Without any difficulty I might add. I could see through my 5%, which is why I have a 2nd layer of 5% over that. So your 20% should be a piece of cake to see into/out of.

I do't believe in tinting the front windshield as I believe that may be illegal in all states. However, if you want to keep the heat out the front, I believe clear Huper Optik can be applied to the glass to reduce heat and UV transmission.

I have already done that. It is illegal and I consistently think about that.

I enjoy it though, makes a big difference.

gosh id love to match my front tint with the backs, its crazy in nevada where im origianlly from you can go way dark but ya i dont want to get busted either i think even when you register your car (at least here in utah) they will check the window tint STUPID! i think the color of your interior makes a huge difference too. on my civic i had tan interior and i re-upolsterd the rear seats and bought some black sparco (knock offs) for the front that were black and it made a huge difference in the look of how dark it was. on my front windows you pretty much had to be within a foot or so to even see the dash. the backs you couldn't see anything. good stuff

you can see through if you step back, but if you're trying to look in and see the sound system you cant see in. Unless you press your face up against the window and cup your hands around your eyes. Which is the main reason I got the tint. And most of the time the layer of dirt that covers my car makes it impossible to see in from a distance anyways.
